I think it's a lot more economical to buy one large size ND/PL to be shared among several lenses via step up rings. No more worry about dark corners as well.

Are the high ISO tests done in reviews run in poor light? I'm finding my K-x quite noisy at ISO 800 in low light but ok in bright light. I would expect this to some extent with it all still being signal to noise ratio but considering the main use for high ISO is low light I am a little disappointed bearing in mind it was a class leader at the time.
The signal to noise ratio should be exactly the same provided it is correctly exposed regardless of whether it's bright or dark.

The bolded condition is vital. The camera may underexpose the pic (i.e. shutter speed not low enough) and the picture is either pulled up in post or the camera does it on its own. And pulling up exposure introduces a lot of noise.

The reason behind this is usually to save highlight (my Olympus E-P1 did this a lot) and in dark conditions with a few light points, the camera may try very hard to "save" the light sources.

I suggest you test it out using RAW. Look at the RAW file on PC without any exposure adjustment. If it's excessively dark, you have an underexposure.

In situations where the camera has already boosted its ISO to the max tolerable, lowering shutter speed (or increase EV compensation) helps a lot with the noise. This is the correct "exposing to the right" technique.

Ok, I'm an noob and I admit it. Will someone tell me, please, just what is a "prime"? The converter I understand and will probably purchase one shortly. I'm happy with the 55-300, but I want to reach out further and Bigma is out of the question just now.

Thanks.
If it's not a zoom, it's a prime. What lenses do you have now?

And my teachers taught me that people who admit they don't know something are actually smarter than those who always think and act like they know everything.

Just got my Sigma 8-16 and clueless about how to use it properly!

My photography usually concentrates on macro, close up, portraits - those things that you want (and are able) to isolate the subject via blurring the background. Even my street pics with MFT in the past were done with a fast Panny 20mm f1.7.

Now with an ultra-wide, pretty much everything will be in focus. Please, can someone help me with some guidance re ultra-wide photography.

Just looking around the web as K5 prices have crept up again at SRS etc and came across the K5 here for £929 with 5yrs warranty (provided by company not manufacturer though).

I've no idea if the company are reputable etc?

be careful with dirt cheap K-5. It may be old stock with sensor stain, as I have found out trying to save 50 quids and ended up wasting my time. I then went with SRS and everything seems fine so far.
I personally do not trust retailer warranty, even from renowned retailers. There are questions like: how r they going to repair? How much expertise do they have in repairing as compared to the manufacturer? Etc. Maybe cuz I have had bad experience with retailer warranty. The guy just blatantly denied repairing and blaming it on my misusing or unfamiliarity.

Yes, you can get such an adapter and I believe that they are still in production. It is basically a machined insert for the bayonet mount on your camera which is slotted in and then allows the M42 lens to be mounted to the camera. You can then use it in either Av or M mode. I find metering with the green button in M mode produces the most consistent results for me.

There are a range of types and I would strongly advise against anything except the original Pentax one, as others are not made to such good tolerances and there is a risk that they may get stuck on your camera.

The original Pentax models can be found in the classified section here occasionally or on eBay for £20-30.

Hope you have fun with the 1.8/55 - I have one and it is a very nice lens.
Can you remove the lens + adapter from the camera? I.e. if I want to switch from a M42 to my kit lens, do I have to remove the M42 lens, remove the adapter then put on the kit lens? Or can I just do it the normal way to remove the M42 + adapter like it's a PK lens by itself?

Truly all these videos are rubbish. Specially comparing DSLR's based on video quality but not image quality. Well it's hard to find good review website where you find true and well done test.
Regarding to photo above, is it really ISO12800?!
Yes, it's ISO 12800. EXIF link from Flickr

In case I wasn't clear enough in the post, I did run it through Topaz Denoise.
The straight out of Lightroom version is below. NR was at default Lightroom level (0 luminance, 25 color).

Other day I found on youtube, video where guy is comparing Nikon D7000 and new Pentax K-5. I don't know what he took before but said that D7000 is much better for high ISO photos. Such a b*** this photo shows that K5 smash it up, also I checked DPReview, IMHO K5 has best high ISO IQ, for APS SLR
I know the video you are talking about. I watched that one (and wasted my time) as well. It's fortunate that I did my research based on independent review with evidence (I even when to as far as downloading all dpreview RAW files for D7000, K5, 60D and GH2 to compare then side-by-side on my computer), instead of listening to one guy's opinion on Youtube.

that's really interesting. some people have noticed k-5 stains developing with time. perhaps some of this initial coating you had wiped off might explain it. the coating might sneak in under the AA filter, then cause the stains?
I doubt it to be the case. If coating sip between AA and sensor, it should become patches, not spots like the stain.
