Help! Sensor cleaning made it worse.

My sensor was showing a few spots of dust - not surprising since I have been changing lenses outdoors a fair bit. I purchased a Rocket Blower and a VisibleDust Arctic Butterfly SL700 sensor brush to attempt to rectify the problem. After a few blasts with the blower and a once over with the brush - all according to the instructions - the sensor looks like the above. About a million times worse than it was before, in other words.

My wife used exactly the same blower and brush to clean her sensor (on a Canon EOS 30D) before I did, and it worked perfectly on hers.

Does anybody know what on earth has gone wrong here and how I can get my sensor back to some semblance of normality?

If she cleaned hers just before you did yours then maybe dust from her sensor was still on the brush, then you deposited it on your sensor?

I had exactly the same with my K5 the first time I cleaned it with my arctic butterfly. I think there must be some initial coating over the sensor. A clean with a cleaning swab cleaned it.

Canon dust is not compatible with Pentax sensors I'm afraid.

You can get universal dust which works on both.

Isn't the K-5 a 1.6 sensor, not a 1.3?

As long as it is not wider you should be OK

Well that's certainly reassuring. Did the Arctic Butterfly work okay on subsequent occasions?

They have the 1.6 size on there too. Same price. Most likely I'll try them.

No it's grease type muck off the brush. I made the exact same mistake of using a brush on my K120D sensor after seeing a couple of spots of dust, and was horrified afterwards. It looked just like Mark's OP. I did the right thing and got swabs and cleaning fluid and everything was OK after that

that's really interesting. some people have noticed k-5 stains developing with time. perhaps some of this initial coating you had wiped off might explain it. the coating might sneak in under the AA filter, then cause the stains?

I doubt it to be the case. If coating sip between AA and sensor, it should become patches, not spots like the stain.
