I have heard that if you interupt the two contacts for SDM, then the body will think it's a screw drive lens. Not sure what the best way of doing that is though.

As I understand it, there is no way for a DA* lens to flip between SDM or screw drive as and when; it will always try for SDM so you need to 'trick' the body.

Something to consider if you dont get anywhere with a 2yr warranty.
A small piece of insulating tape over the lens contacts should do the trick. Easily reversable so no warranty violation.

Well if Hoya don't own them then there's no excuse for not having k mounts on all their lenses! I can understand if pentax had a hand in their design and wanted to release a DA* version but it shouldn't take over a year to bring it out and give the competition the advantage of your design in the mean time. Also not everyone needs the sealing so why not have an unsealed version too with the Pentax badge on it.
I hope when the K7 starts selling in big numbers, they might rethink the lack of k mounts.
In my opinion the most most likely reason is that there is an agreement between Hoya/Pentax/Tokina prevents tokina from selling a K mount version. Maybe it is time limited, since there have been K mount Tokina lenses in the past.

I agree with your point about not everyone requiring weather sealing. I for one could easily live without it and SDM too.
If the design allows for it. I would like to see a more basic version of all of the * lenses, without weather sealing and SDM.

The increased sales should lead to economies of scale and increased profits.

An extract from an email I received overnight from Pentax US. I wonder if the same is offered in the UK and Europe?

Quote:
Every PENTAX K-7 purchased includes an Extended Warranty valid for three
years and an exclusive in-the-box coupon just for K-7 buyers for up to
15 percent savings on a variety of PENTAX lenses, flashes and
binoculars.
A further extract, which explains the ethos behind the camera and possibly the direction Pentax are going.

Introducing the PENTAX K-7.

Our latest K series camera is built for PENTAX SLR photographers who
have been asking for more advanced features in a smaller, solid,
comfortable-to-hold body. This high-quality construction coupled with
the growing line-up of PENTAX Limited compact prime lenses offers a
compelling combination for serious PENTAX shooters and many others who
currently don't own or previously have not considered adding a PENTAX to
their camera bag.

I ound this one from a forum search. Seems incredibly cheap! http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_3&products_id=99219

Does it matter that the 1500mAh is different from the Pentax one (1620Ah), and will it work with the original charger.

Many thanks.
Should not be a problem,as long as the voltage is the same. The Pentax charger does have trouble with some of the higher rated batteries . I have seen some from Germany as high as 2500mAh, They are more expensive but are said to give very good performance and are usually sold with their own charger.

I echo the comments above. I purchased a generic Pentax Fit 1750 mAh battery with my K10 and in truth I use it more than the original. It charges with no problems in the Pentax charger and on average gives me around 100 extra shots per charge

Lemmy,
as an example... I have individual focus adjustments set for my DA*16-50 and my FA 50 (they are both quite different). My DA* 60-250 did not need an adjustment.
BTW these are settings in my camera, not the lenses.

Three lenses three different focus adjustments, that's my experience

The GX10 like the K10 does not allow individual lens adjustment, so any adjustment you make via a special debug menu will be a compromise and will affect all your lenses. This is one of the big advantages of the K20/GX20 over the earlier models.

In the case of my K10 I settled on an adjustment that seemed to work well with my FA 35, FA 31, DA 16 -45 and DA 18 - 55. The biggest problem this causes me is FF with my FA 50mm.

I was going to post some comparative images of the 4 lenses above at 35mm, but I think the point has already been well made. The FA [email protected] and FA [email protected] are sharp wide open. The DA 16 - 45 is not to far at F4.0 behind, at F 8 all are good.

The idea of groups of shops getting together and forming a buying group was tried in the 1970s. It didn't last long, so I assume there are major snags with such a system.
Logistics today are vastly improved compared to the 70's.

I can see why the manufacturers might not like it, but it might be a way for Pentax to regain some high street presence.
