If I had half an idea to start a 'proper' camera shop, I'd soon reconsider.

Apart from a few exceptions (like SRS) a shop is a showroom where people can try various cameras and decide which suits them best from a handling point of view etc.

Then what do they do, buy from the internet, mail order.

Unless you can shift enough boxes at a price that is almost as competitive (read cheap) as some online sources, you'd be on a hiding to nothing.

SRS have got it just about right. Good quality pre-sales and after-sales service keeps customers coming back but you still have to pay the rent on the premises and wages etc.
I think there is plenty of opportunity, you just need to take a different approach to what you are selling. The original camera sale is the start of the customer relationship (loss leader), but I would concentrate on the additional value added services that I could offer.

Digital photography opens up a multitude of opportunities that an enterprising shop owner can tap into.

But you do need to keep the level of service up and you should have staff that actually knows what they are selling.
Wise words, I hope he takes your advice.

A further thought, the traditional professionals shop at your local golf course, experiences the same kind of problems as the small camera shop. What many have done is to form buying groups that increase their purchasing power.

I can't see why a similar approach would not work for camera shops.

A good range of primes adds kudos, plays to a traditional Pentax strength and maypull in some extra lens sales.

In the past I usually had 5 and at times 6 primes to cover the 28 - 200 range and a couple of zooms 28 -70 and 70 - 210 when travelling light.
With the the introduction of CAD and improved manufacturing the difference in IQ between primes and zooms has narrowed considerably, which is maybe not such a good thing if you make most of your profits through lens sales.

The problem is that Pentax say that DA are designed for digital so for fullframe to need to rename those lenses that will work on fullframe.
But then comes the question why aren't the DA*55 and the DA*60-250 named DFA* in the first place?
I don't want to start the FF debate again. The point I would make is there is a difference between working on FF and being designed for FF. There may well be IQ drop off at the edges.

I think it is true to say that all of the later DA's show significantly less vignetting than the 18 -55 Mk1 kit lens and DA 50-200.

Going back to your original post I hope there is a DA 135 announced

DFA645 25/2.8
DFA645 55/2.8

DFA*50/1.0 SDM
DA135/2.8 LIMITED
DFA*20/2.8 SDM
DA*400/4 ED (IF) SDM

I'm really questioning how real this is to behonest.
DFA* lenses for which camera, there is no FF with SDM or are pentax also busy with a fullframe.
Also on the previous roadmap there was the DA*30mm that would have the same design as the DA*55mm but no news on that here.

Ah well it's nice to throw some rumors on the forum
the 135 and 400 seem the most plausible to me as they fill a gap (135)and extend the range (400).

It is the 50 that I find most strange as a DA it so close to the 55 that it would seem to make no sense. Reports are that the 55 does not show signifcant vigneetting on a 35mm body and may well be suitable for full frame, but I heard reports that it was not selling too well.

I know this does not mean much to you guys over there. But a number of high street retailers over here are listing it on thier websites for delivery mid July, The cheapest I have seen is £740 with Kit lens (NOT the newer WR version) and the most expensive is £986 with the same kit lens.

This surprises me somewhat as we usually follow you guys with pricing and more times than not it is significantly higher in price than what you are paying.
Take the new DA*60-250 for example over here you can't get it for less than £1100, yet you guys are paying £899 for it. So what gives ::
I would expect the K7 to settle at around £750 allowing room for a K30 to slot in at around £500

I realised that and have no problem with it.

On the subject of cars , as long as it gets me from A to B I don't have a problem with what I drive. My approach is usually to buy a base model, all the engineering performance and reliability without the hassle of gimmicks going wrong.

What the auto industry and governments don't seem to realise is that as cars have become more reliable and since there has been no real new innovation, for the majority there is no longer a need to change cars as frequently as in the past.

It will be genuinely innovative products that start people spending again, and manufacturers and service providers should be get creative and sieze the opportunity, rather than asking for handouts and raising prices.

End of rant, time to drink some more wine. Some new bunkers were put in at my golf club and I have an early start photographing the redesigned holes as the sun comes up.
