Well I sent it off to them yesterday so we'll see what they say. I must say the email I had was singularly unhelpful as it just said "send it off to this address".
Watching this with interest Kris, the outcome will have a big influence on my future lens purchases

No problem Steve TBH, I find video rather trying
(And I have to be careful how much I do at the moment )

Another issue is that I don't really have a location that's suitable for videoing Still, if someone knows anyone with a studio we could borrow (or if someone is willing to stump up some cash to hire one) then that may be possible

Matt
I know what you mean about video, I am hopeless with a video recorder and find editing very tedious.

about just creating a video
"Just"? I wish video was that easy for me Whenever I've done anything with video it's taken me about 100x longer than the footage to get anything sorted. Taking the video is one thing... producing it into something usable is another.

I was looking for a small informal group, but I'll bear those requests in mind!

The thinking behind the post was to enable as many forum members as possible to benefit and for you to maximise the returns for your efforts.

Maybe another forum member would be willing to help with this project?

Here's a suggestion (actually more of a heartfelt request)

Somebody please video the session (whenever it is), and post it here.....

(As neither Sunday or a weekday will do me any good - being 5 timezones away )

Hey Matt , what about just creating a video and then distribute to interested parties in a similar way to your flash guide?

Even better why not ask Danny to shoot the video with the K7?

I expect lenses to last virtually for ever, but these days they are very complex items, so it may no longer be a realistic expectation.
So this raises the question what do people feel is a reasonable life expectancy for a DA* lens; 2, 5, 7, 10 years?

I think this is important bearing in mind that these lenses are factory sealed and not user serviceable.

A concern is how Pentax will support these lenses going forward. How likely will it be to get an economic repair (replacement motor or new seals )in 7 years time?

I previously raised the point of a on/off switch within the firmware that would allow AF focusing via the screw drive. The early versions of the K10 firmware allowed for screw drive on a SDM lens, so it is possible and I would have thought relatively easy.

I accept that having a dual system in consumer lenses would not be economically feasible, however for a * or Ltd lens the higher selling price should easily cover the addition manufacturing cost. In fact if marketed correctly (as a backup AF system)it could become a selling point.

Depends how long you are staying, but for best prices in the US I normally buy over the internet from B&H Photo. They will not deliver to a hotel, so I have them deliver to a US address where I am working.

If I remember correctly, standard delivery is around 3 days to anywhere in the US.

I tested your theory and gave the same answers as previously and once again came out Olympus.

Not conclusive I know - Steve

Apologies if this has been linked to before. I just completed the quiz and came out as an Olympus, which I can live with.

I assume they don't provide it on the basis that they do not expect the USM drive to die. My guess is that in time all the lenses will be USM and the screw drive will be phased out.
Your probably right Kris, which makes it even more important that the motor is durable. After all we are not talking about a cheap disposable item here.

In another thread I advocated a simplified version of DA * lenses with the same optics but without SDM or weather sealing. Provided the designs and assembly processes can accomodate this, then I see economy of scale benefits for Pentax and more choice for users.

I have heard that if you interupt the two contacts for SDM, then the body will think it's a screw drive lens. Not sure what the best way of doing that is though.

As I understand it, there is no way for a DA* lens to flip between SDM or screw drive as and when; it will always try for SDM so you need to 'trick' the body.
I don't think that works. I've tried a DA*300 with a AF Teleconverter with no SDM contacts and the lens would only Manual Focus. I've been told SDM lens will only use the screw drive if the camera body is not compatibale with SDM.
That's a shame. Well..it was an idea...
And a good one

I cant see why they cannot include an option to turn SDM off so that in a situation like this you could at least use screw drive.
I agree, if I recall correctly SDM was a firmware upgrade on the K10, I would have thought that it was relatively easy to mod the firmware to include a menu accessible on/off switch. I would be interested in Matt's view on this.
