If you do decide to break the camera down, it might be interesting to some that the back also fits the ME super and possibly some others i.e. MG/MV. I have one fitted at the moment, the thumb grip helps with longer lenses.

I might be interested in the focusing screen depending on price.

Hi Shaun , the dates don't work for me I'm afraid. My wife and I travel up on Monday 4th of June and head home on Friday 8th. We are staying in Grasmere, so if anyone is around and would like to meet up for a pint and a chat, send me a pm.

I Dremelled off the aperture lever to see how it worked
in Av with a K-5.

Seems OK.... possibly better than it did as a Manual
using the green button. f/4 gives the correct reading.

The shots were of a gray card. The RGB values were read
straight from the jpegs in an editor.

I would normally do an RGB balance before this type of test
so that they are all the same for RGB.

28mm f/2.8 M after Dremelling off the aperture lever
====================================================
200 ISO : Outside
Av Mode K-5

f/2.8 102 105 124 1/640
f/4 115 118 137 1/320 Nearest to 117/118 = Correct Exposure
f/5.6 131 134 151 1/160
f/8 131 134 151 1/80
f/11 145 148 165 1/30
So does this mean that the modification to the M28 tricked the camera into thinking it was a M42 lens, which I believe work quite well in Av mode?

Steve is in Av, Algi is in M.

Agreed, I was talking about what happens in Av mode.

Is it possible a lot of these shots were taken with the lens wide open?

If not, I don't see how the exposure would be any more accurate without stop-down metering.
That would be my understanding too, Chris. In practice, however, I have found repeatedly that I can shoot in A-mode over a range of 3 stops (1.8 - 5.6 on my K 55mm, for example) and still obtain well exposed shots (even when shooting JPEGs): a practice I wouldn't dream of indulging in with either the K20D or the Samsung GX-10, which I presume behaves similarly to the K10.

Is it possible that this different, and completely counter-intuitive, behavior of the K5 when compared with the earlier bodies could be function of its sensor: in particular its enhanced dynamic range and hence greater exposure latitude?

Just to be clear, it was not my intention to suggest that one could dispense totally with stop-down metering when using the K5 with manual lenses. Rather, I was seeking to communicate that this 'fortuitous aberration' makes the use of manual lenses with the K5 a little less demanding and somewhat quicker.

Best wishes,

Jon
When using an M series lens or A series (aperture set to other than A) with a K5 or K10 in Av mode, it makes no difference where the aperture is set on the lens. When the shutter is pressed the lens is not stopped down and remains wide open. I have just tested this on a K5 and K10 with 2 A series (28 and 50) and 2 M 55 and 135)series lenses.

Try it with the aperture set wide open and then stopped down to F22. The exposure will be OK, but there will be no difference in depth of field.

Hi Stewart, thanks for the offer, but although the outer box is the same, the inner section is shaped to accomodate the smaller size DSLR screens and so is not suitable for the larger 35mm film SLR screens.

Hi, I have acquired a couple of spare focusing screens for my Pentax film cameras and am looking for a genuine box(es)to put them in for safe storage.

If anyone has one or two that they no longer need, please drop me a pm.

Thanks Barrie, just did the same and working fine. I can't recall ever switching it on before, maybe it was on by default.
I checked my User 1 settings and it was enabled. I assume that these were carried over from before the firmware update, which would seem to support the idea that the default setting has changed.

I may have discovered a bug in the new firmware. I noticed today when using an old 'A' series lens that my K5 was allowing shutter release before focus was confirmed. This happens in all modes except USER mode. The position of the focus mode dial 'M' AFS or C makes no difference I have rechecked the settings and everything is set as before.

Catch in focus is not enabled and focus priority rather than FPS priority is selected for AFS and C
DA series exhibit the same effect when the focus mode dial is set to 'M'

I have tried the usual switching off, removing the battery, to no effect. I have also reset settings but again to no effect.

Has anyone else experienced this effect?
