Hello there, here's a set I am posting more to share my discovery of an artist than my photography. I have even gone so far as to go all colour (I have not yet taken that road photographically) - a very important part of his work, I feel...

I was recently in Paris for a short visit and had the pleasure of seeing a very interesting exhibit in Beaubourg (Centre Georges Pompidou) contemporary art museum. I had never heard of Frantz West, an Austrian artist with a very personal take on art, alternately or simultaneously conceptual, useful, funny, serious, participative, beautiful, ugly... You can read about him here if you wish: link.

This exhibit will be coming to Tate Modern sometime next year. I urge you to attend even if (especially if?) you are wary of contemporary art concepts...

it's a good way to force some thinking when framing and positioning, that's for sure.
For sure indeed. I have an M135 and I just don't know what to do with it. I simply makes me quite uncomfortable (which can be a good thing, if one can harness that discomfort in some way - I haven't yet).

#1 and #4 work for me here (#1 for the composition and the bird/underground story, #4 for the dynamic abstraction). I'll try to keep these in mind for inspiration if/when I put that lens back on my camera...

I'm in the "problem" camp with these, albeit probably not the same problem as others - I just feel my computer screen cannot do justice to these images, in which I sense great potential. I would really like to see these (even more than with "regular" images) in print. Not necessarily very large, but large enough to accomodate the immersion I feel they command.

Some seem to tend towards impressionism (1, 3, 10), some towards minimalism/abstraction (2, 11, 12), others towards some kind of alternate dimension of movement (4-9, the most promising set to my taste).

Something about viewing them on screen just hits me wrong for some reason - but oh how I can imagine the results on a smooth coton rag...

the point for me is, in this particular case (as with many - though not all - branches of photography), to ask the viewer to consider, or look at, a subject in a way they might not have considered it before...
Yes, absolutely...

4-9 definitely hit that nail... and much more!

The one I like best also, I feel the others want to bring out too much of what isn't quite visible in the original.
Myself, I would probably go in the other direction and go for more of a silhouette... there is so much we can see and do with our images!

Several of these remind me of your Hebrides set, and, like them, are quite beautiful and are the ones I prefer. In particular #'s 1 & 10 both have a ghostly line of swirling mistiness (probably caused by the receding waves?) across the frame that is quite compelling - I would probably get lost in contemplation of those on a good print.

#13 took a little longer to work for me, but that riverlet spilling into the sea finally spoke up and told me where to look (at itself of course). Lovely.

I like this too, for the geometric contrast between the branches and the overpass.

I might even have cropped out the water to better concentrate on that aspect - the image gets very dynamic viewed that way (IMO of course). However the water does bring a peaceful counterbalance to all that is going on in the upper part...

Good job.

A nice set, in which I would single out the more 'coton-y' ones, where the subject is no longer the landscape or townscape, but has become a mysterious 'mistscape' (i.e. 2, 7 and 10).

Very nice. You could make an ever-ready case for your camera with these.
