How about a Sigma 30mm ?

Or if you wanted to go longer, the Pentax 70mm ?

Beautiful burnt amber colour to the leaves Martin. I think it probably needs to be viewed as a large print to appreciate the details, as those leaves look pin sharp.

After a summer washout we certainly have those autumnal colours to look forward to.

The lighting & composition are off for me also. As Matt says, it's almost the whole flower so not being able to see the lower petals is off-putting.
The straight on composition & harsh light lose the sense of depth also. Plus the dark black of the background & bright green of the stems draw the eye from the main subject.

The composition of your shots from what I've seen are usually well thought out in general, you need to apply that to these kind of shots too.

I can bring the 14-24mm for you to have a play with, You will love it. I take it you have a N***n camera as well.
It would be nice if we could get a few people there. There's a few who have said it's a good idea on the survey, so here's hopeing.[/quote]Yes, I have the D700 also.

Ok, so who else thought it a good idea in the poll ? Reveal yourselves... don't be shy.

It was quiet when I went last & was dissapointed to find the blacksmith had finished for the day. I'd also like to catch the baker in action. Some of the buildings are cracking, the trick is trying to capture a shot that cannot be dated by modern dress/signs etc.

Did you spot this guy ? Friendliest Ram I've ever encountered. Shot with the DA 14mm.

It's fairly local for me & I have been there a few times. I notice they've added a woodland walk recently too which may be good for the twitchers among us.
It's not far to Cardiff Bay from there either which is good for architecture & people watching.

I doubt you'll be able to get a proper meet off the ground as there aren't that many members nearby, but I'd be interested. Especially if you bring that 14-24mm for me to play with

Thordell... take a look at mikews flickr (linked in his sig) where the small size version should fit on your monitor.

Searching "selfridges night" on flickr results in a load of blue floodlit images. A trip there when it's dark seems in order !

I can see why you've gone mono due to the clouds but this one doesn't have the impact that the colour ones you've shown us have had.

Apart from being a cracking subject, it has hit the mark with the eliptical highlights for me.
It's just gotta have highlights to give the full LB effect.
Is this building floodlit at night I wonder

I hope I haven't discouraged you at all pentaxbabe, please don't stop sharing. I know very little in the grand scheme of things it's just the settings of these 2 shots are a bit off the mark.

I wish I had the confidence and motivation to take a course. You don't need to remember everything at all times. If you remember to check aperture shutter speed and iso for each shot you'll be able to adjust them to get the best shot you can.
