Hi there,
I've been using Pentax since I was given an ME Super at age 16. (still got it!) I've also used the MX & LX.
I went digital with the istDs and kit lens, later augmented by a 50-200mm DA.
Most of my photography is outdoors, usually on cycle touring trips in places from Norway's Lofoten islands to a Himalayan trip (Manali to Leh) 2 years ago.
This year I'm spending 4 weeks riding from Seattle to San Francisco in May and am planning to take advantage of the current £100 cashback offer by buying a K20D.
The question is which lens to get with it ? (The istDs will probably be sold complete with the original lens.)
The new 18-55 MkII seems well regarded and I had no problems with the previous one, although I often wished for something a little wider (my favourite film lens was a 24mm).
So, is the 16-45mm worth paying an extra £100 for ?
Andrew

just to add my bit,
Not seen much mention of shake reduction on K20D.
Because of a disability i frequently shoot one handed, even with my 16-45 zoom I still get rock steady shots under most conditions tested.
Although only had the camera a few days I cannot recomend it highly enough. It is superb.
Regards,
Peter

How much wood would a wood chopper chop if a wood chopper would chop wood?
Kindest regards,

Thanks for all welcomes and replies.
I've tried upgrading my old version of PhaseOne's Capture One (3.7.7) to 4 but it refuses to so I downloaded v4, does not look like my oldish computer will run it!
I've decided to find a stop-gap alternative until I can afford a new PC seen as I've emptied the piggy bank on a K20D!
I guess it will be a 4gb sdhc for the card.
Again, thanks for the warm welcome.
Ian.
Look at the 7 Day Shop 16 Gig Dane Elec SDHC cards.(Dane Elec Ram is running my PC, it's excellent kit)
These are super, very cheap,(Channel Islands so No Vat or postage), and I get 814 shots using the RAW+ setting(RAW & JPEG).

Peter

Hi all, thought I would say hello.
I joined earlier in the week, read some posts, rang SRS, ordered my K20D which arrived yesterday.
The advice from this forum was spot on, and yes I did plug the forum and get free postage!
First impressions of the K20 are very positive.
Features offered on this camera seem to surpass all the other manufacturers at this price point. I'm currently in a transitional phase between my Minolta gear and Pentax, although I fully expect to retain some of my old favourites.
When I've sold some of the Minolta glass I will indulge in some Pentax equivalents as I only have the 55-300mm at the moment to use on the K20D.
A couple of decisions to be made pretty soon are regarding a new SD card and RAW conversion software.
SD(HC), I currently use a Sandisk 2gb Extreme III CF card in the Dynax and will probably go for an SD version for the Pentax. With the increase in sensor size on my new camera I guess an increase to 4gb would be a good idea.
Is SDHC a big improvement over plain SD?
RAW converter, I predominantly shoot RAW and use RawShooter or Phase One (v3.7).
Neither of these seem to read the PEF file, or is this just the K20 version?
Regards,
Ian.
I had a similar problem and with Lightroom 1.4, and now it's fixed!

Avoid any MZ bodies where the model number ends with '0' (MZ-50, MZ-60 etc.), they have what is commonly referred to as a 'crippled' lens mount. This effectively prohibits the use of older manual lenses.
Both the MZ-6 and MZ-7 are capable cameras. The MZ-6 is perhaps the most modern, short of the MZ-S, and can use the P-TTL/Wireless flashes.
With patience, you can find good quality later film bodies on ebay at reasonable prices. I recently picked up an MZ-6 for £36.00, they typically sell for around £60.
The camera has never been damaged, knocked,or dropped, it just suddenly stopped working.(yes I did replace batteries, and tried a new roll of film, every thing lights up and acts as normal, but the shutter is dead)
It has had very few rolls of film through it,and despite it being in as new condition.
I've also been told it's a common fault with these cameras!
Of course the cost of repair out weighs the value of the camera, so it sits in the bag an uneconomical repair!
Perhaps Pentax would like to comment, on this being a common fault, apart from quoting uneconomical repair charges!

I have recently purchased a used Pentax 16-45 from a forum member (Vikramkeshvala) and am very happy with it and also the way the sale was handled (very quick delivery).
The lens was purchased by Vikram on 19th December 2008 with a camera body from SRS and should have most of the warranty period left to run. Does anyone know how I should get the warranty for the lens only transferred to me, given that they were combined as a package when sold?
Thanks,
Richard
