What you need is some decent tyres on your vehicles!
I used dubbed tyres for many years, guess they are prohibited in Britain. But the last three winters I have used what we call dub-free winter tyres (soft rubber, lots of slices), and I have no problems on icy or snowy roads.
This is England, I rather think you are forgetting that! What you need is some decent tyres on your vehicles!

What on earth are "Dubbed" tyres, never heard of such things?

2 inches of snow and London grinds to a halt! Its a joke. All trains and buses were running here. I just put the snow chains on the car,off I went and removed them when I reached a clear road which wasn't very far.
We live on the north west edge of Europe where it snows in winter but this somehow takes the whole of England by surprise. To an extent the BBC, IMO, should shoulder some of the blame with its scaremongering news coverage, same goes for their coverage of the credit crisis.
BBC correspondents were at the side of motorways all over the country this morning to report that all roads were clear and the traffic was light because people had been forced to stay at home because hundreds of schools were closed.
Roscoe, Glasgow City Council has many faults but the roads were all extensively gritted before the snowfall, the pavements were clear too and you can get free salt/grit for your own driveways and paths.
MikeW, I couldn't agree more.

Pavements gritted? Never been seen in years mate, side roads? Forget it,
Free salt/Grit?I've had to buy my own at a silly price from B&Q, you don't know how lucky you are then!
If severe weather only happens rarely, then local council heads just get buried!

Well at least that's proper snow - I find ever more depressing how people are challenged by the slightest foul weather. My daughter's bus in Nottingham dumped all its passengers as they 'couldn't carry on' but oddly managed to get back to the depot - empty. Taxis weren't picking up.
I took two hours to do a 45 minute trip because of a tiny snow fall late last year. Every muppet in the world was out at 10 miles per hour. It's snowing get on with it!
I truly am a grumpy old man. I don't want to be though!

Snow is only a problem, because there is no money in the pot to grit the side roads and the pavements.Well at least that's proper snow - I find ever more depressing how people are challenged by the slightest foul weather. Unlike years gone by, when the local council men used to go down the side roads flinging rock salt onto the roads and pavements, now only the Major roads, and Motorways get any gritting!
The rest of us are left to struggle out of our properties, and try to get down the treacherous side roads as best we can without slamming into all the parked cars and vans that are left in all the side roads!
As heavy snow is a rare thing in this country, local authorities, will not not buy in large quantities of rock salt, are loath to pay the gritting men overtime to grit at night, or have a snow plough standing about that may never get used, for 18 years, the result when we get freak weather, we are unable to cope!

I've heard that the Magic Lantern guides are a pretty good purchase. Having just got my K20D last week, would it be a worthwhile investment? (they are very cheap afterall at approx £10). What would they give me that I can't get from the manual or from support on this forum?
Much better than the "Operating Manual", much more detail and everything is explained so much better.I've heard that the Magic Lantern guides are a pretty good purchase. I recommend them, as a good buy well worth the price!

If there are bargains to be had, can't we all have the web site address, so that we all might avail ourselves of these bargains? Not at all, I am just asking for the forum details as I would like to take a look.

Has anybody any good or bad experience with 16 GB cards? I bought an Extrememory Performance 16GB 133x SD and when inserting the card access led remains on for an extremely long time (8-10 sec or more). The same when taking pictures: it writes images extremely long, what's more writing images increases in time from picture to picture, and after 6-10 shots it never ends. Or ends with various error message: Image is not stored - Memory card error - blank screen.
My old slow 2GB Ridata is much faster (2x-3x)
Even if image is written sometimes it cannot be played back (camera can not display image)
I tested the card with other cameras (eg Canon) - it works fine. Also it works in card readers.
I complained at the store, they replaced it but the new one behaves exactly the same way.
I have 1-2 GB cards of different manufacturers (Ridata, Kingston, Transcend, noname), 8GB sandisk Ultra II, tried 4/8 GB TDK - all works.
Is it a problem with the brand or a size problem? Does anybody use 16GB or more? As far as I know K20D should work up to 32 GB...
Any clue?
