Thanks all for your encouraging comments and suggestions. Hippone, yes, it's heavy and takes up almost as much space as a K-1 and 28-105mm combined. added to that, I am considering the need for grad filters with the way the skies are getting blown out, and the only ones that fit are the Lee 150 size but that is for another day.
My local store is well stocked with bags and they have suggested I take everything in and see what works.

Couldn't resist the discount at SRS and the FA15-30 arrived today, so here are a few test shots. A bit of post processing but no cropping.Comment Image

It's a bit of a beast and I'm going to need a larger camera bag! Comments welcome.

My main reasons for tethering is for a check on my still life and portrait work. Not being able to tether is a serious disadvantage. I see that Nikon and Canon systems are available and to be honest if I had known that my photography was heading into this direction I would have given Pentax a miss when I upgraded my system a few years ago. I hear of pk tether working fine but I just can't get it working with my K5ii
I know it doesn't help your current setup but tethering with ImageSync on an iPad works a treat with models using wifi, and in one review I read it performs much better than the Nikon and Canon versions.

This is a spoof, right? If RPS really rate this stuff then I have no interest in even being considered for membership. Reminds me of visits to The Photographers' Gallery in London, where I always come away depressed at the awful state of the world consistently portrayed there!

Though not 'legacy' in the real sense, the Samyang manual focus options are a compelling choice for K1 users ..... perhaps not so much the longer ones (eg 85 / 135mm), but certainly the wider ones. I don't think manual focus is such a concern with wide angles, and the sort of landscape and architecture stuff I would be taking with them suits the manual focus approach anyway.

I'm thinking specifically of the 14mm, and now the new 24mm F3.5 Tilt Shift ..... this is something I would really be looking at when I get a K1, or K1 successor ...... link

With the 14mm, while for some subjects the distortions would prove too difficult, I imagine that with the high quality optical performance if offers, plus the resolution of the K1, it would be easily possible to happily crop into the images .... I mean frame wide, and crop to achieve field of views equivalent from 15mm through to about 18mm without significant quality loss .. ? (So its almost like having a 14-18mm zoom).

For me, I'm thinking now that I have a D FA 28-105, the 14mm plus 24 tilt shift would probably meed most needs.
I'm with you on the tilt/shift, it's been in my sights for a while now. There was one on special offer a while ago but I couldn't do it at the time so I live in hope of another sometime!
Regarding lens distortion I was surprised how easy and effectively this can be done in Lightroom; it deals with the 10-17mm with no problems although there is loss from cropping.

Yes it's a super image. I know the requirement was for b/w but I wonder what it would be like in colour?

Thanks for all your replies guys, I finally have made up my mind and not going to get the K3. I don't think I will ever sell my K5IIs and the excellent DA300 but going to invest in another system. (Unless Pentax announces their answer to the D500 very soon:mrgreen.
I guess that would be the K1 - full frame I know but designed to write 42mp files but if you prefer you could always set it to cropped aps-c for smaller files, and you could use the DA 300 in both formats.

Just followed Steve's Flickr link - I would recommend others do the same, an outstanding collection of images.

The other night my wife woke me at 4 am to say she had never seen the stars so bright through our window, and she was right. As I blearily peered out I thought now is the time to try the astrotracer but to my shame the thought of getting dressed and getting the kit all set up was too much and I rolled over back to sleep. So a double well done for your perseverance and congratulations on a brilliant shot!

Why didn't he prepare his presentation first? Keeps fidgeting with the camera to no purpose and making it up as he goes along. Looks a great camera but this guy is in the wrong job.
