Yes, it's a shame that reviews often have the caveat about the small range of FF lenses so that is where some new products are needed, especially as most third party manufacturers still avoid the k-mount.

Just saw the above site lists best cameras (UK). Under £1000, first is the K3II and second is the K70. Over £1000 the K-1 is second (behind the D500, so best FF therefore).

It's a K-1. I should have tried tethering to an iPad for a better image, but Steve's suggestion of auto focus would probably be better.RobL wrote:
I'm really impressed by these so thought I would have a go last night in the back garden, not a dark sky location but a clear night after the street lights go off. The exposure of 30 secs at 2.8 worked ok but I struggled with focusing, in live view the screen at night had a load of white specks like radio interference and although I could see a couple of stars it was more like guesswork to get them sharp. Any ideas?

Thanks for all the suggestions. To be honest I didn't want to spend much as I have to get a new PC monitor - and we all know how much photo editing monitors cost. I've ordered a new data cable as I think the one I was using might have been faulty. Hope that's the isssue. On the pk tether site some guy has stated that the software works with his K5 so I might post there. Seems tethering support is a weak area for Pentax cameras. It could seriously make me look elsewhere when I next upgrade.
To repeat my earlier comment the tethering for the K-1 works a treat with a mini iPad giving a measure of remote control of focus and exposure settings as well as live view, and allegedly better than the opposition. Probably the same with the K-70. And if you have an iPad you don't need to buy a special piece of kit so put the saving towards your upgrade instead. I mention the iPad because it is handy and portable, but the Image Sync app could be downloaded to any suitable computer. Thanks for all the suggestions. Thanks Steve, I was struggling a bit in the dark and hoping the neighbours didn't think we had burglars as I fumbled with the torch, but it's obviously a good idea to practise a lot before driving miles to my nearest dark sky! Still don't understand the 'white noise' on the live view as I don't get it with the cap on to compare. Anyhow I got enough to see the potential, the camera picked up millions more stars than I could see even though they weren't keepers.
Nice one, I like the dappled light, it really shows how the deer's colouring works. The park is just down the road from my house so I spend quite a lot of time photographing there, mostly from the public footpath that crosses from Charlecote to the stone gateway on the Stratford Road.

There are probably more K mount FF lenses around than any other brand (even many of the older ones are surprisingly still available new, see the SRS and other dealer lists.)
Walking past the diminished range of town centre camera shops I've noticed that the K-1 is often highlighted in the window. Pentax had no presence a year ago like that.
I think Pentax need to formally re-issue the FF limited primes and make the plastic fantastic DA35 & 50mm formally FF, add 20, 24 & 28mm primes and have affordable pricing for them. All the optical designs exist so with updated cosmetics they'd be a better range than the other brands have.
