I've got a Sigma 170-500. I don't use it often, but there are times when it is the *only* lens that will do. For sure, it's not a "carry around" lens and a quick think back tells me it only got used twice in 2013, once at a wetlands centre and once at an airshow. Would I part with it? Can't see it, somehow...

The joys of using technology... it should of course read "pored"

Nice set, Peter. Newspaper archives are full of pictures like this which give us a look into the past. I can easily see these in a paper today and being poured over in 75 years time when someone wants to look back to the "good old days".

Canary Wharf is privately owned and it's not overtly clear where the boundaries are. The guards there have (in the past) been quite robust, often to the point of rudeness in asking people not to take photo's. Cabot Square and the Plaza seem okay, but the other side of 1 Canada square isn't. On another day, it changes.

I'm going to give it a try in the next week and see if I get stopped. Again.

I've all but given up trying to use a camera at CW, however; the experiences above suggest that the attitude of the local guardforce has softened. They used to trot out the "private property" line, which whilst true strikes me as a daft when the world and his dog carry cameraphones capable of some pretty good resolutions.

I might schlep over there next week...

Just a word of caution - there are some K-mount lenses that fit film cameras perfectly, but won't fit on a DSLR. One such example is a Vivitar 70-210 Macro which I've had for many years and can't use in the modern age.

I use my phone to look at the forum from time to time and have no issues with speed or a but of zooming...

It can't really be much easier, why the need for change?

This lens seems to be akin to Marmite!

I hired one from SRS, tried it for a few days, sent it back and then placed an order. It's been in the roughest of terrains and pretty extreme climatic conditions. It is my default/walkabout lens. Never had an issue (apart from it sometimes refusing to focus, but that turned out to be a carbon based error by someone in a hurry :$ ).

This might not fit exactly, but where would you put a Sigma 170-500mm? Certainly not vintage, but in terms of being collectible, I had to scour the planet to find one when I obtained mine in 2008, simply because they didn't make that many with a Pentax mount.

A great topic though, John!

The 'MS Surface' is underpowered, with an OS that would make V-Tech look complicated and totally tied to Microsoft and Google. The surface forces you into making decisions because it is hamstringed by an inflexible and unforgiving narrow minded approach to creativity, apple products, the iPad in particular allows you the freedom to explore your creative dreams and gives you the ability to realise them

You might also consider a Microsoft Surface tablet - cheaper than an iPad and somewhat more flexible.
You suspect incorrectly. I've used both and sent the ipad back. For sheer ease of use and familiarity the Surface was streets ahead.

Not wanting to get into an MS/Mac debate.
