But back to the tall ships. Here's another "bigger picture", shot from our bedroom window:

What I am curious about is whether or not unlimited editing is actually something that a lot of people want to do or is it not? If hardly anyone really wants this ability then limiting it is hardly a punishment is it?
John, I know you mean well and I don't question your motives. This line of argument, though, is a slippery slope, I think.

You have the right to go out in the public and proclaim your opinion in free speech. Hardly anyone is making use of this right (with the odd exception, of course). So taking away this right would in general be of no consequence to most people, would it?
See where I'm coming from?

Goes without saying that this a bit of liking apples with pears.

Edit: (not only because I can ) Chris was typing his post at the same time, apparently. He was, of course, more apt in conveying what I also wanted to express...

The rigging in #3 looks a bit of a nightmare, not a job for the faint hearted.
Yes, I'm happy that on modern ships everything is so clearly arranged. Here's an example from the engine room of the latest German research vessel:

Much easier, eh?

Yeah, sounds like real fun . I'm quite happy that research vessels tend to have engines...

I think the link argument is strong enough to stick with the unlimited edit. I cannot recall if I ever used it but I know that I was annoyed at one point when I found out that there was a limit for edits on another forum.

I'm with George on the forceful rebuke of malicious changes. That should be enough.

Thanks all!

Yes, Hyram, you're right, I didn't shoot in the rain (as it tends to lower the contrast too much :wink.

Nimitz, I see what you mean re. #2 and #4.
I tried that for #3 (funnily enough) by focussing on the rope in front (the light coloured diagonal one). For me that didn't work. But then, it's a completely different set up with the distance foreground - background much greater (and the distance camera - foreground as well).

Cheers,

#1: What did you focus on here ? My guess would be the two letters behind the front wheel. Overall it is a bit lacking of sharpness, on the other hand the background/ceiling could be more blurred. Difficult to get this one right and I think you faired pretty well.
This subject with all the reflections would have certainly given the autofocus a good run...
I like the composition and PP (in spite of not being a friend of blown areas in general).

#2: Great shot, focus seems to be exactly where it should be. I would crop the top, though, to get a "monochromatic" background (i.e. get rid of the dark stuff on the top). You also took the right aperture, the DOF is just right (to my taste at least).

Last weekend was "Hanse Sail" again in Rostock/Warnemünde. The weather was a mixed bag. This time I wanted to concentrate a bit more on the details rather than the "big picture".

However, here is a "whole" ship to start with:
(all of these with K20D and the Sigma 70-300 DG APO Macro)

I agree with George. I'm a bit hesitant to upload a pic to the gallery AND put it in the "Your Photos" section as it has a feel of cross-posting to it.
I did upload some photos that I had in earlier "Your Photos" threads, though.

So how do we get to a consensus on that? Is posting in both encouraged, tolerated, frowned upon, discouraged or an absolute No-No:::
