The Gallery

Earlier I made a rather disparaging remark about the gallery, saying it contained a lot of somewhat indifferent pictures.

Had another look this evening, and saw quite a lot of rather good ones.

Because this site attracts people from all over the globe, I found myself wishing that more people would add some words to tell us a little bit about their images. In the case of a building, what it is, and where, for instance.

Peter Elgar does this well, but some people say nothing at all. So, if you are reading this, and have some pictures in the gallery, please add a few details.

If I may change the subject a little, does anyone else, like me, find themselves feeling rather reluctant to say anything negative about any of the pictures in the gallery?

As George says, there are lots of good ones. And it's nice to be nice about them.

But some aren't all that good. Unlike critique threads, though, where comment is implicitly invited by posting, I find myself thinking along lines like "well, he obviously likes it... or he wouldn't have uploaded it to a 'Gallery'... so who am I to say anything."

There was one picture where I had to comment, and I PMed rather than commenting on the picture's thread.

Thoughts?

It's all in the eye of the beholder!,not everyone is brilliant,but posters are still proud of their achievments!.....and with a bit of luck and alot of hard work and practice we will get better!

It's precisely why I'm so reluctant to criticise in the gallery.

But having a thread associated with each picture then seems unbalanced, if all that is said is positive. And then there's the risk of inferring criticism if there are no comments.

I don't know. The concept of a gallery where the artist nominates his or her own work, with no criteria for acceptance, and no rejection, just seems a bit strange to me. Critique threads seem so much more real, somehow - I know where I stand there.

Go ahead and criticise (politely), I say.

I had a look at the pictures in another gallery of somebody who reacted strongly to criticism on here recently.

Every comment was of the gushing sycophant variety (totally boring and unhelpful), which perhaps explains why he was somewhat discombobulated by a different experience here.

PS: Beginner, I think it is time you adopted a new nom-de-plume. The present one constitutes a breach of the Trade Descriptions Act.

I agree with George. I'm a bit hesitant to upload a pic to the gallery AND put it in the "Your Photos" section as it has a feel of cross-posting to it.
I did upload some photos that I had in earlier "Your Photos" threads, though.

So how do we get to a consensus on that? Is posting in both encouraged, tolerated, frowned upon, discouraged or an absolute No-No:::

Seriously, I don't think it matters.

The powers that be would have no reason to object, since it's not taking up more space, and (I still think that) if you want a proper discussion about a picture, you're more likely to get it in the 'Your Photos' area. Nothing wrong with putting the same thing in the gallery as well, IMO.

Just post where you feel most comfortable.

After many many years of camera club membership and having my photos critiqued I am immune to comments - like the good ones, look at the bad ones and act if I agree, otherwise, hard cheese mates!

If you are in any doubt, I was complimenting you! Your descriptions are a model for others.

Well, I have decided to follow the suggestion of the PUT. So If I want C & C I post them in the "My Photo's" section. And I only submit into the gallery when i think they deserve it, to be there. If people feel the need to comment on the gallery, fine by me. But I won't ask for it.

I learn from comments. If someone doesn't like a photo of mine then I greatly appreciate them telling me how they would shoot/crop/PS it differently etc. Next time I would then apply that advice and see if the shot is better. Nothing like a novice learning from other's experience.

I think the Gallery is rapidly getting better and is, in a gentle way, sort of self-regulating, people might only post if they think their work is of a comparable standard. I must say I was put off at first by the amount of archival magazine pictures. On the subject of C&C, if you dont want to be shot at then dont stick your head over the parapet.
