When I go out with the intention to take pictures I'll take the K-5. All other times I take either the Panasonic LX7 or TZ7 compact.
Likewise, except that in my case it's the K-r or the Canon S90.

Having said that, since it is so small and light (and takes superb photos !) the S90 usually goes along as well as the K-r !

In the best 'Goon Show' tradition - " A cardboard cut-out of 3 pieces of fruit !"

I have come to this posting quite late but to answer the ORIGINAL question I prefer to use 8GB cards most of the time even though I always save BOTH RAW and JPEG files, and have found this size plenty big enough.

My thinking is that the smaller the card the fewer images you will lose if a) you lose the card, or b) the card should get corrupted.

I do also have some 16GB cards and these are useful if I want to do some 'burst mode' shooting (e.g. birds in flight etc).
How do you decide when you need the 16Gb card in for the burst mode? Surely by the time you've swapped the card over you've missed the shot? Why not just go with the 16 or even a 32 and leave the 8's for when you run out of space on the larger card?
That's easy, John. I always carry at least one spare card with me and the only time I know I'll need the larger card is when I've paid to go for a 'Photographic Day Out'. At other times I prefer to play safe with the smaller cards. I also follow the same advice of another poster on this thread, i.e. always download the images as soon as possible after taking them. My present 8GB card is still not full and I have images dating back to last Autumn on it !

However, it's a personal choice so 'each to his own' ! I just like to play safe !
(Similarly, I always carry at least one spare battery and either that or the one in the camera is an AA holder so even if 2 batteries run out I can always get some AA's and stay active !)

On the second 'thread' of RAW or JPEG I was once given the answer by a professional photographer "You can spend a lot of time working on the RAW files or you can simply leave it all to those clever Japanese engineers !"

That said I do like to see what I can get out of the RAW images by making my own adjustments in PSE11.
However, for example, my posting today is simply the result of 'Those clever engineers at Pentax' !

I think therefore that my suggestion to the OP is, for now, 'keep it simple !'

Hi Nigel

I have only just seen this set and what more can I say that hasn't already been said !

To me, it is the vibrance and clarity that makes them stand out as really 'professional' quality.

Great stuff

Another nice set, Nigel.

Again I like the clean crisp appearance of the daylight shots and I especially like the bokeh behind the clock.

The night shots have also come out well with good colours and I LIKE the curved reflections on the last one !

I got a pair of lens hoods for my DAL 18-55 and DAL 50-200 from Hong Kong via ebay. Quite cheap and they both fit perfectly.

These are a great set, Nigel.

What strikes me immediately is the clarity and sharpness, especially of the first ones of the buildings. There is a clean crispness which makes them shout 'look at me !'

I look forward to seeing some more !

Best regards

I've decided that it's time to upgrade from my K-r. I can't run to a K3, so my options seem to be a second hand (mint) K5, or new K5ii or K5iis, with my preference being to go for new. As a result I suppose that I'm really looking at a choice between the K5ii or the K5iis.

My main photographic interests are landscape (urban & rural), old buildings (ruins!), macro/close-up mainly of flowers and insects, and still life. I'm not interested in fashion or portraiture.

Given the type of images I like to take, is the iis worth the extra money? What would people recommend?
Since I like 'throwing a spanner in the works' - how about this....

You didn't say what lens(es) you are currently using but if you are still using the basic kit why not just keep the K-r and use the money to buy some better glass ?

It won't be money wasted even if you do later ugrade the camera !

Just a thought !
