Probably the most useful could be the 18-135mm. It's versatile, produces nice punchy images and is WR as well. I use mine most of the time.
And I'll second that !

They are fairly pricey new but look out for offers or a used one.
There were some bad reviews when this lens first came out but I got mine last year and am extremely pleased with the quality it returns.
So if you go for a used one try to find out if it was an early one before buying.

Correct, no need to format on first use, but no auto formatting takes place - they are pre-formatted based on the specifications stipulated by the SD Association and are ready for use..
But I think we're talking about 're' formatting after transferring photos to the PC.
Many thanks for clarifying that, Steve,

However, I find that good quality SDHC cards are so cheap these days (in relation to the value of our equipment) that I just buy new ones and keep the used cards as an additional backup (I know people say they have a limited life but that is still a useful fall back). After all, we never re-used our film negatives did we !

Perhaps I've just been lucky but my experience with the K-r and K50 and several other makes of compact digitals has been that there is NO NEED to format the SD or SDHC cards - I've just put new cards in the camera and started shooting with never a problem ?

The cameras appeared to have automatically formatted the cards on first use ?

Peter,

Do bear in mind that my success rate is at best 5% - most of my pictures get binned. Especially from that session - the first dozen or so came about very blurred and I couldn't understand why. Until I discovered that I'd somehow managed to turn off the auto focus.

As for older lenses, I must admit I have become rather used to zoom lenses since going digital. Though I do have a couple of quite fast old lenses - f2.5 135mm and f4 200mm come to mind, which may overcome my laziness.
Steve, you are too modest !
If the 5% come out as good as those you've nothing to worry about !

The other 95% are what we call learning from experience and that is half the fun.

These are amazingly sharp images Steve - so good I thought you must be telling 'porkies' about which lenses you used !

I got these 2 lenses with my K-r Twin Lens Kit and I've never managed to produce anything coming close to the clarity of these shots - but that's just ME I suppose !

If you are happy with old MF lenses then I'd definitely agree with David about the Pentacon and the Helios 58mm. I already had the Helios from my old Zenit and the Pentacon was the first lens I bought off ebay. They are both bargain gems.

Keep up the good work.
Best regards
Peter

Our local museum say they archive all digital media on GOLD CD's.

I checked these out and found several makes that are advertised as having a life of 100 to 200 years !

What is more, they are not really that much more expensive to buy (I use SVP)

Apparently standard CD's use aluminium which corrodes eventually which is why they fail. However gold, well, gold is gold and doesn't corrode !

I won't be around to test the makers claims but it seems worth a try ?

Then, of course, way back when the dynosaurs roamed the Earth, I used to selectively rub the enlargements with my fingertips as they were revealed in the developer tray !
Probably why I've now got dry cracked skin !
