Pentax Roadmap
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
That may not be completely true Nigel, the claim that 35mm is better in low light depends on the photosites being larger, which actually means that a 35mm camera which is "better in low light" has a lower spatial resolution than an APS-C camera. The problem users of a Pentax 35mm are likely to hit is one of vignetting with wide angle lenses. Film is very forgiving of angle of incidence, digital sensors less so.

IOW the sensor size does not change DOF. no it doesn't, but changing focal length does and a larger sensor size dictates a longer focal length for the same subject distance and framing. You know this perfectly well.
K-3 sample images

Two things jump out at me 1: nothing taken above ISO 200 2: on a camera which has a shiney new metering module which is one of its flagship features, all but one of them has a significant exposure compensation applied. As always it's hard to tell anything much from sample images, looking forward to some reviews and user experiences!
CCD vs CMOS
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
Things made in the 70s and 80s weren't based on modern silicon chips Smeggy, the technology simply didn't exist and comparing a PRIME or CCD chip to 70s and 80s computer technology simply isn't comparing the same thing. In a modern chip you are looking at electrical connections literally a few tens of atoms wide. The simple act of passing a current through them will cause degradation over time through electronic migration which would never accumulate to problematic levels in the chips made in the 80's. My source may well not be accurate, but I'd be surprised if it's out by more than a factor of two and personally I wouldn't bet in which direction. The K10D will die out long before the K1000 Think about this another way, when there is no more Velvia in the world, isn't it better to have a filter which approximates the look than not? No one's arguing that the filter is as good as the real thing, but when the real thing no longer exists, surely the filter is better than nothing?
Pentax Open Day - 9th October 2013

It should be safe to assume that it'll be at least as good as the models on show though
Pentax Roadmap

The situation with Pentax 35mm remains the same as it has always been. The project was cancelled in 2000 when the MZ-D had insurmountable difficulties. There has been no officially confirmed intention from Pentax or any of its owners to enter the 35mm DSLR market.

I read somewhere that the lifetime of a silicon chip is approximately 10 years, give or take. I read that some time ago, and I'm not sure if advances in technology are causing it to go up or down, but I would propose that the lifespan of the CCD itself and the associated processing hardware will put a hard limit on the lifespan of the camera. These items are not designed to be replaced, and in any case replacements are unlikely to remain sourcable. In the old days it was mechanical bits and all you need is a mechanical engineer who'll make you a new sprocket. It might be expensive, but it would always be do-able. You wont be able to do the same thing when your PRIME imaging engine packs up, I doubt even Pentax could supply a replacement at this point even if they wanted to.
Officially K-3?
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
Same external body and people complain that it's the same camera new body and people complain that it's a new battery grip The old grip was good for 3 flagship models, I think that's a pretty impressive run all things considered.
Will pentax user be come Ricoh user ?
Posted in General Photographic Chat
It's the Ricoh Pentax K-3 in the same way that the first of many was the Asahi Pentax. Pentax as a company name is a blip in the history of our favourite camera system, even my MZ-7 says Asahi Optical on the bottom.

Now that's a technical term if ever I heard one!

What are these "Other" camera makers people keep refering to?
CCD vs CMOS
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
Nigel does have a point though, if it can't be nailed down what the "special" qualities of the CCD image are, then when the last K10D clicks it's last click, those qualities will die with it.

True, although the expanded range on the K-5 goes to 102400, so it might equally be expected to be less good at the top end..... either way is speculation until we get some reviews.

Assuming that it works, it removes any concern you might have about an AA Filterless camera for general purpose use.

Certainly not something I've heard of before and they're claiming a world first. If it works, it'll be the best of both worlds

No mention of custom functions for expanded ISO, so looks like 1 stop less ISO at the top end than the K5. Otherwise pretty sweet, looking forward to seeing some reviews.

This may turn into another K-5II versus K-5IIs thread do you think we could formulate a version of Godwins law for camera forums, something along the lines of "The person who first mentions the word Moire has lost the argument"?
Metz 48 AF-1 - Massive over exposure
Posted in Flash Photography
Sounds like it could be a dirty contacts problem, if the big chunky contact in the middle is connected then the flash will fire, so it's quite possible to have a good enough connection to fire the flash but for the digital contacts to be misaligned or dirty such that the camera-flash communication doesn't work. I've seen this with my Sigma unit before.

I know that Andrew feels the same way about his K10D and thus keeps that for good light situations. It could explain, it part, my drift away from the K20D to using Ektar 100 film! K.the problem I find is that I can never get it to go into the SD card slot.
Problem with Extak

And this is on a pentax forum because?because most of the people here use computers to process the output from our digital cameras, and might benefit from knowing that a particular supplier is causeing trouble? General Chat, the clue is in the title.
F & FA lens focus speeds
Posted in Lenses for Pentax Cameras
The SFX is much malligned in my opinion, sure it's ugly as sin, but it does the job nicely. I love the old manual focus assist function on the early AF systems, where it tells you which way to turn the lens when in MF mode.

Are you saying you don't have the unreleased cameras plugin for photoshop McGregNi?

My house has a bottle opener fixed to the kitchen wall (put there by a previous owner). If I'm at home I never have to look for one again.
F & FA lens focus speeds
Posted in Lenses for Pentax Cameras
the Fs tend to be fast, I suspect because they're designed to work with the very early SAFOX bodies, consequently the lenses are designed for auto focus speed almost at all costs.I don't understand then why Pentax didn't continue with the fast auto focus speeds when they developed the FA and DA series.this is a guess again, but because people didn't like the manual focus feel of the F series. Their focus is so loose and the throw is so short that they are very hard to focus manually. Also, people wanted features like non-rotating front elements and quick-shift focus clutches, all of which increase the complexity of the drive train and therefore make it slower. I'd bet that a DA 55-300 on a K5II is still faster focusing than an f70-210 on an SFX
