thanks John, that's very much my current thinking.

What is the quality of the plastic like on the mount of the DA? My one significant concern is the longevity of a lens whose body is made entirely from plastic.

Jessops stores were indeed a very mixed bag, it was very much pot luck whether your local store manager knew anything about cameras or not. One of the two in Nottingham used to serve me very well when I was there.

I separate the individual stores (some of which were useful) from the overall brand, which I consider was a blight on the camera shops of the UK.
The staff in the Hanley branch would of been better of selling fruit and veg, used to go in just to have a laugh at the comments the sales staff use to make.

I went in and asked for a ND filter and the manager came out with a selection of filters, not a single one what I asked for, I asked him if he knew what one was, and he stated yes " it's to make blue skies more blue".

I also over heard a sales woman explaining that more mega pixels on a compact camera means better image quality for night time shots and if it had over 20 mega pixels they could take pictures in the dark, she was selling to an elderly couple and I just had to step in at that point and put her and them right.

What with their lack of skill and knowledge and uncompetitive pricing it was only a matter of time they went to the wall.
I always used to use my Auto110 as a yardstick by which to measure a Jessops I had not used before. I would walk in with the 110 on a wrist strap, and only deal with shop assistants who recognised what it was, or were at least interested in it.

I have an old M42 mount Zeiss Flektogon 35mm f/2.4. It is an excellent lens which I love, but its fully manual nature limits how much use it gets.

All the time I have owned the Flek, its value has slowly crept up, and I have always joked that I would sell it the day I could buy a 35mm Limited Macro with the proceeds.

That day has yet to dawn, and realistically it never will. However, I probably could buy a DA 35 f/2.4 for a very similar price to what I could get for the Flek.

I am currently torn, the Flek is a lovely lens, but an automatic DA would certainly get more use. The question is, what is the DA like optical quality wise vs the venerable Flektogon?

KILLED OFF BY JESSOPS

All the decent camera shops were bought out by jessops and look what happened to them
agreed, Jessops ate most of the good camera shops then went bust leaving us with nothing.

Those of us within striking distance of Watford are ok, everyone else is a bit stuck.

with AF lenses I think it's relatively new, but on MF lenses it's as old as AutoFocus itself.

Mount a MF lens, set the camera to AF.S, hold down the shutter release and it wont go off until something hits the plane of focus.

As far as I know the only Pentax auto focus camera which doesn't have this is the ME-F

Brilliant shots both, I tend to use this feature for hand held Macro with my Tamron 90mm on the K-10D

Give Chris a ring, he's a good guy, I'll bet he can do something.

There's a big difference between owning a camera and even using a camera and being into photography.

My wife owns a camera, uses it often and quite frankly has more natural talent with it than I do, but she's not really interested in photography as a hobby or an artform, she just likes to have pictures of places and events along lifes road.

One thing Digital has deffinitly done is to increase the number of people doing their own development. The barrier of having the space and time to set up a dark room has been removed, since the tools of this trade are now a computer and some editing software. This side of the hobby has increased to such an extent that many people seem to believe it didn't happen before

for some reason, I totally missed the link in your post, not doing well today!

Having now had a look, tbh I think they're making a mountain out of a molehill. Yes, it vignettes a bit wide open, but it looks entirely correctable to me. The only test shots you can actually see it in are the ones of the single palm tree against a plain sky.

I just don't see it being a problem in the real world. Certainly no where near enough to merit complaints that it's "not a full frame lens".
