I went for the Sony RX100 as a pocket rocket and I'm struggling without a viewfinder too. Surprising what a difference it makes to older eyes.
My eyesight is the only thing I miss.....

Well lets not get too excited. The proposed launch date is more than a year away. By 2014 Sony will have an interchangeable lens version of the RX1 with a decent EVF. That's a digital MX if ever I saw one.
Pentax will need to come up with something special and at a special price to make any impact in what will be a very crowded sector by then. Un crippling the lens mount would be a huge step in their favour. All that legacy glass with rapid manual focus and aperature selection.....

My vote goes to the DA 17-70.
Second place would be Tamron 17-50. Probably sharper than the 17-70 to be honest but the Pentax's extra reach at the long end is a winner for me.
Sigma also do a reasonably priced 17-70 which is worth a look too.
Depends on your needs/wants and budget really.

You can make a basic but reasonably effective dew shield with a piece of black card and some selotape. Even better is the black foam sheets you bet in craft shops. It's a high density soft foam about 2mm thick. It comes in the same sizes as card/paper. A4, A3 etc
Another option is a small 12v travel hairdryer and one of those Car starter contraptions which is basically a 12 battery in a plastic case with sensible connectors. ( like this)
A quick blast when it starts fogging up and you're back in business.

I'd recommend you use the kit lens for a while and figure out what focal length works best for you. As you can tell from the above posts everyone has their own personal preference. have a look at the exif data and figure out which focal length gives the "look" you prefer, then have a look for a prime as close to that as you can get. The classic lengths for street photography are in the 35-50 mm range in full frame so 24 - 35mm in Kx terms.
But there are no rules, much longer focal lengths can be an excellent choice for candid pictures.
If you do settle for the wider end of that range, I can second the recommendation of the Sigma Superwide II 24mm lens. There is a manual focus version and an Autofocus version. The AF version is harder to find but they still tend to sell within your price range.

I've used the 7day shop ones and I haven't noticed any colour cast. I admit I haven't been looking for one so I haven't conducted any critical comparisons with and without. However I haven't noticed anything except better colour saturation and contrast.... and more money in my pocket.

I do need to get a thin "pro" one for my 12-24 though as the 77mm one can be seen in the corners at 12mm.

I used to keep everything but recently I've become much more ruthless. I have literally thousands of pictures that are of no photographic. historical or sentimental merit whatsoever so what is the point of keeping them? They are just eating up disk space and making backups take far too long. I do tend to wait until I've seen the camera pictures on the computer screen before binning the "bad" ones though.
If I ever get to the level of post processing where I need a blurred layer I can always take another crap picture ( that really isn't that difficult for me....) or blur a good one.
I'm slowly going back through a couple of years of mostly mediocre ( at best) shots and destroying the evidence.
