using the 16-50 with firmware 1.10 improves the focusing,
but isn't 1.3 required for the SDM to work?
Yes it is, but it'll use the body's focussing motor with firmware 1.10, just as it does on a *istD or other non-SDM Pentax body.

Same story with my 50-135mm too, no problems.
Hi Peter

How much do you like/rate this lens? I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of mine from Chris (hopefully get it tomorrow plus an 18-55 for £25 I have a location shoot on Thursday with two models and an MUA, time is short to do any serious testing, any advice regarding this lens and portraits would be welcome.

BTW: that's an very impressive arsenal you are aquiring
I think the DA* 50-135 is a super lens. Build quality and image quality are superb. Even the quality of the lens hood is improved over the normal DA hoods. It's light and compact and curiously does not change in length through its zoom range, similar to the one touch zooms except the zoom barrel turns instead of slides. It's a joy to use and fits nicely into my Slingshot 200AW bag.

I'm very jealous of the 135-600.

It's certainly a beast of a lens. I honestly haven't had much chance to use it other than for a few test shots but couldn't resist it. They seem about as rare as fossilised rocking house manure.

Perhaps I should start up 'Loan-a-Lens' . . .

I've jut tested my '90' series 16-50mm and have no such problems. It focuses well in very low light at both extremes of its zoom range.

Same story with my 50-135mm too, no problems.

Chances are it'll only work in fully manual, or any of it's automatic modes if it has any. TTL flash control is not supported on the K10D as it uses P-TTL (Pre-flash TTL).

I'd have thought it was a far from useless lens. I assume you bought it thinking that it had macro capabilities.

Two Pentax lenses spring to mind, the FA 50/1.4 and the FA 100/2.8 Macro.

Thanks for that, but i have to use autofocus these days my eyes are not as good as they used to be i just can't seem to get sharp focus without it. I intend to buy the 1.7 adapter and use the mirror lens as a stop gap until i can get hold of a good 400mm f4 telephoto. John.
Most (if not all) Pentax AF camera bodies provide focus confirmation in the viewfinder. If the little green hexagon is lit, you're in focus. If the result then appears to be out of focus it's probably just the lens rendering a soft image, rather than out of focus. Try another lens, mirror, or reflex, lenses tend to produce softer results than a normal/decent all glass lens.

Which camera body are you using?

You could also pick a scenario which would be enhanced by the inevitable graininess that you'll get from such a fast film.

Old steam railways, narrow boats on canals, citizens of advanced age, some types of architecture, etc . . .

A LowePro TLZ1 is just about big enough for a K10D + Grip + DA* 16-50mm (I just tried it, I have the non-AW version). This combination completely fills the bag leaving only a small outside pouch for accessories. Anything placed in the inside pocket might damage the camera back.

It might interest you to know it has a belt loop too.

For the DA* 50-135mm lens, a TLZ2 is needed for it's longer 'snout'.
