I found this AF chart the best as there's no ambiguity about what is being focused on. Print out the single pages near the end of the pdf.
These are the charts I've used for a couple of years.

All good information, but he makes no mention of how to setup a zoom lens for checking. Should it be set to the short end, long end, or somewhere in between? Who knows?

AF is done at full aperture, so the brighter a lens the more light is available for AF. An f/2 lens would allow more light through than, say, an f/11 lens so AF would find it easier to focus, just like our own eyes would.
It's for this reason that I've switched from using a DA* 60-250mm 1:4 lens to a Sigma 70-200mm 1:2.8 for night time racing work. The DA* 60-250mm was hopeless at focusing on the K5 in low light, it is much better on the K-5II, but still not as good as the Sigma.

There is no doubt in my mind that the DA* lens, once focused, produces slightly sharper and more contrasty images than the Sigma, but that's no benefit at all if you can't focus it accurately. I'm getting keepers with the K5 + Sigma, I rarely did with the DA* lens.

The problem could have still been there though.

The more you stop down, the more of the subject will be in focus. the object is to find the centre of the focus plane so minimum DOF is required.

Wide open is best.

Blimey, you do some long range shopping. Did you know that there's a town called Watford not far from you, where you'll find a very good Pentax Pro dealer.

Adjust to the right (+ closer) will make it sharper or more OOF?
Neither, you are simply moving the plane of focus backwards or forwards so that the sharpest part is actually the point you are focussing on.

You need to take an image of a target like these at 45 degrees to check whether it is back or front focusing, and by how much. Then make the adjustment and check again.

If the lens isn't sharp at any point in the first place, making this adjustment is not going to make it so.

This is odd when you consider that the AF function is performed with the aperture wide open and once set, the lens elements shouldn't move.

Have you checked the diaphragm to ensure you haven't got a stuck or missing blade?

Firstly, there is no CS5 version of Acrobat, all the version numbers are numeric 1 until version X and now XI.

In Vuescan you can certainly save scans in different file formats, TIFF, JPG, & PDF but they will all go into the same folder.

To do what you wish in Vuescan you'll need to create two 'Options' files, then scan each image/mag using both sets of 'options', each having a different .PDF size and save folder.

Could you explain please?

What is it that seems strange to you?

The topic title suggests that your K-30 is setup to save RAW files in DNG format whilst your K5II is set to save them as .PEF (default).

If that's the issue, change one or the other in the menu system.

I had a similar experience about a week ago when I tried to take some shots with my K5II + Sigma 150-500mm.

AF was all over the place, it would seem to focus OK, then shift the lens a little more making the image in the VF very OOF.

The remedy was to remove it and clean the electrical contacts on the lens and the camera body.

After re-fitting lens to camera, all was fine again and has been ever since.
