Many thanks Liam

Really helpful, the flash discharge mode has been changed!

I'll have a look at the more expensive one, don't mind spending the money if it's worth it. I work as an airline pilot and I'm off to Hong Kong on Saturday so I'll hare a look over there and see if I can find a bargain.

At least I know what I'm looking for now....

Thanks again

James
You're welcome..

Re the AF360FGZ, as you were working to a budget, rather than not being able to afford it perse, then there's absolutely no doubt that this is the one to go for.

Great lighting first time, every time. As it's got the bounce head, then you just point it at the ceiling, extend the catchlight panel (a peice of shiny white plastic, that gives you great catchlights in the eye) and press the shutter. The camera and flash have a chat and sort everything out for you.. great for quick candids when you don't want to miss the shot.

The AF540FGZ is another option, but more expensive again at around £250 ish. which is more powerful, and has the option of swivel as well as bounce.

Cheers

Hi Gwyn,

It uses the A/M settings only (IIRC, I'll check later), the flash set to S1 (again IIRC), and use the pop up flash to set it off. As I say, I'll check that set up later.. but it definitely does work.. just with limited function.

Cheers

Hi James, and welcome to the forum.. also congrats on your daughter..

I can answer the second part of your post.. press the FN button, and then the down arrow on the dial above it. The two flash settings, AUTO and A, (positions 1 and 3) will pop the flash up automatically. Choose positions 2 or 4 (4 is red eye reduction mode) and that will sort it out for you.

Re which flash.. any Pentax branded flash will be fine, although you'll have to set some of them (the smaller ones such as the AF 200 for instance, which goes for just over a tenner on ebay) manually.. If you can afford to save a little while longer, then for around £150-160 (depending where you buy) the AF360FGZ is the one you want. Fully automatic, and can be used off camera wirelessly, controlled by the popup flash. It also helps autofocus in low light, by shining a red contrast beam.. You can get full AF in total darkness.

Hope that helps,

Cheers

A friend runs exclusively Epson printers in his TV/Video studio, so I had a word with him. In turn, he recommended I spoke to the guy at a local business machines shop, who is a very keen digital photographer. This I did.

He had the R800 on the shelf, but said that, although he also used one at home, he would rather not sell me one now, as the technology was getting a bit dated. He pointed me to another model, then showed me a couple of A4 borderless prints from it - amazing! The model was the Epson R265, a six-colour printer using Claria inks. It was less than £70, which made me uneasy.

He said that I could try it and if I didn't like it I could come back for the R800. How could I lose? I tried it - I will NOT be taking it back, it's absolutely unbelievable! I wish I could show you the results, but I can't. All I can say is WOW!

Given that I was thinking of spending R1800 amounts of cash, how refreshing that the input from the shop manager was based on knowledge of the product rather than "most cash in the till."

I'd no doubt have been delighted if I'd bought an R800, but I've now got a considerable amount of change to spend on ink and papers. Result!

Ray.
Hi Ray,

if you want to advertise the supplier's shop/website.. and it looks like it's justified, put a quick post in the Recommended Suppliers thread.

I met Peter on the Southerner's beano, and I think he'd be mighty offended at the assertion that he's 67+..

BTW, that doesn't mean that I don't think that 67 is a perfectly lovely age Howard..

Thankyou one and all..

I've been grumpy, gassy and playful with my.. wallies???? (I assume that's one of the buttons on the back of the camera) for years now, but it's darned nice to be legally able to do these things with nerry a hid turn now..

I support Gwyn though.. although I haven't mastered the art of the covering cough yet..

Happy Birthday Liam. Another two years and you'll know the meaning of life, the universe and everything!

Hi all,

I dare say nobody noticed, but I've been away for a few days.. I was 40 yesterday, so we spent a few days in Wales. I have a piccy or two for sometime tomorrow.. and 'cos I'm old and infirm now, you have to be especially nice..

Now to go and get a beer or three inside me.

Cheers

Hi Spider,

no it doesn't light up, that I've noticed anyway. I found that that mode gave me a quick way to get AF-C rather than hunt through the menus.. and I only found that at the weekend.. (along with being able to rotate shots in playback mode on the LCD.. I really should dig out the manual again)

I think I'm right in that I can change the attributes for each mode on the dial, so as long as I remember which does which, I can in theory access half a dozen presets when needed.. which when chasing stuff that doesn't want to sit still could save the shot.

Anyway, to both of you.. yopu may have noticed that I don't need a proper camera.. 'cos I'm not a proper photographer..

Cheers

Liam
