Hi Mongoose,

I thought I'd check on a science forum I'm a member of.. and I got it wrong.. as I thought I probably had. Here's the thread if you want a look.. don't worry, it has you as right and me as wrong..

http://www.sciencefile.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1179941619/0

I don't know if you ever went to the BBC science boards when they were open.. this forum is a spin off from it.

Apologies for off topic-ness Matt/John.

Cheers

Hi Mongoose,

I'm rapidly getting away from my comfort zone now.. not that that'll stop me makiong a fool of myself

Quote:
energy of a photon corresponds to the wavelength of the light via

wavelength = (plancs constant x the speed of light)/Energy in electron volts
This would mean then, that the speed of light must be a variable? Planks constant is just that, and with energy/mass being interchangeable, and photons having only a rest mass, that mass should be constant.. therefore the only variable on that side of the equation is C.. and it's also a constant..

Quote:
so even if you only catch one photon, if you measure it's energy you can get the wavelength of the light and thus the colour.
Now we get into the Heisenberg Uncertainty principle, where if you measure something at the quantum level, you change it's properties by that act.. so that makes the measurement of the energy level of a single photon impossible, because when you do it err.. changes!?

I wish I'd listened more..

I had to look up to be sure what a spectrophotometer was , but i see that (as I thought from the name) it measures actual wavelength rather than just human perceived colour.

is that the bit of what I said (about recording the wavelength of each photon) that you were thinking about?

what is your work?
Hi Thomas,

photons don't have a wavelength. Light at the quantum state is measured either as a particle (photon) or by it's wave like properties. You may have heard the term wave/particle duality. Generally we'd be concerned with the section of the electro magnetic field we perceive as light. These are our our wavelengths of light..

Err.. now it's time to wait for Mongoose.. he's the physics boffin.

Hi Brian,

nice clean site, and well thought out. Design wise, nothing to add, but if you want any help on the techy side down the line, just ask and I'll do what I can.

Hi all,
I finally got to go out and shoot this afternoon.. something a bit different..

We took a walk around Virginia Waters in Surrey, and I took this from over the fence.. I didn't have to stand on Mrs Liam's shoulders, so I assume it's legal..

I'm going to have to go to a polo match now, and try a few proper shots, but in the meantime, this turned out OK I think as a grab.

I'm fairly sure you could just connect the camera to the laptop with the transfer cable that came with the camera.. that way, you could keep taking the photos and they'd be on the laptop straight away. It'd be USB 2, rather than firewire, but for file sizs of 10mb at a time, there wouldn't be a huge problem with the difference in transfer time.

If the cable isn't long enough, a USB extension cable will give you a bit more leeway, just remember that if you're going over 5m extension you'll need a USB repeater cable.. and you can daisy chain those up to about 25 metres.

HTH, and I'm sure someone will come up with something better..

Hi Tyr,

except for the usual touches the picture is pretty much as it came out of the camera. I was shooting up at the sheep who? were at the top of a hill, and the dark sky was a couple of miles away behind them.. but catching us up. That's the great thing about the UK, the weather.. if you don't like it, just give it a minute to change

I haven't taken a shot in three weeks.. due to being a bit busy with other stuff, but I thought I'd post something from last year for something to look at..

It was taken in the Yorkshire Dales, and I just liked the simplicity of it. The dark stormy sky contrasting with the sunlit grass, and a couple of multi-coloured sheep cutting through the angled horizon.

Hope you like it..

Cheers

EDIT: Oooh scary, my 666th post.
