I have recently purchased Elements 7 and also downloaded successfully the RAW update 5.3. I am very new to RAW (Raw beginner!) and I have opened a few RAW photos and edited them in RAW, opened them in Elements and done any other necessary adjustments. I think it's working OK but some questions -
1) Once I am satisfied with the photo, what's the best way of saving, PSD, Tiff or JPEG? (A Tiff file I saved was 28MB and a PSD 50+MB whilst the JPEG about 4MB).
2) Do I lose the RAW file when I 'Save'? (Obviously I don't if I use 'Save As').
3) If I am perfectly satisfied with the saved file in JPEG format is there any need to keep the RAW (DNG) file?
4) Can I batch process RAW files? If so how? What basic settings should I use and again how should they be saved?
5) Is there a way to compress TIFF or PSD files without losing quality?
I've looked at Help files and have a book on Elements 7 but they don't seem to deal with the above questions.
Help please
Cheers
John

Well - your manual focussing skills are still pretty good! Some great people shots.

Hi Ken

Many thanks - I've saved the PDF and will study it later. I have a Pentax 18-250 and I've used a bit of guesswork for DOF previously. Mostly it worked but it's good to have the Pentax DOF details. Thanks again.

Well - I've searched the UK site but can't find it.

Could you point me in the right direction or better still send me the link.

Thanks

John

I've settled down with Pentax User (Quarterly) and of course dedicated to the Pentax Brand. The other is Photography Monthly and this does include Pentax cameras periodically but I guess Canon and Nikon do tend to dominate a bit. But most of the articles would apply to any DSLR.

I think most of the monthly magazines are useful and informative - I've tried most of them! However I am happy with Photography Monthly.

Hope that helps.

Cokin also do ND 'P' filters similar to Kood. I have a set and it depends, as Dan says, on the amount of light available. Depending on the light and the degree of silkiness required I can only suggest experimentation at a particular waterfall using different ND filters. Also a polarised will lose you 2 stops.

Let's see the results when you're back - have a great holiday.

Yup - agree - I've been investigating the 150-500 and you need to download 1.3 from the Pentax Website.

By the way Darren if you don't mind me asking where did you buy the lens and what was the price?

Hi
Hope this is not too dumb a question but....

I have recently purchased Elements 7 and am beginning to get to grips with it but I can't quite work out the difference between Sharpening and Unsharp Mask. It may be my untrained (or old!) eyes but I can't really see the difference.

When should I use one or the other of these tools and what are the advantages or disadvantages of them?

Cheers

One final point to add to my previous post. With property (including cameras) taken out of the house (whether abroad or not) there is often - but not always - a limit left in the car especially when unattended.

Be careful to check if there is a limit and whether there are any special terms e.g. keeping possessions in the boot and always locking etc.

Never fill up with petrol and leave the car unlocked while you pay for the petrol!!!

Over the years I have had constructive negative comments which have helped tremendously.
Whilst I joined the Pentax User website back in 2005 I am to all intents and purposes a new member as I have only started contributing in the last couple of weeks. Since then I've had such comments in my gallery about sensor spots (I've since cleaned the sensor and made sure I clone out any spots in future, 2 cropping suggestions which I think had potential to improve the photos and one or two other helpful comments.
So as regards Pentax User comments have all been helpful as far as I am concerned. You can view the comments in my Gallery.
Afraid I can't immediately dig up earlier photos where I've had negative comments - also some have been verbal but none were destructive.
Finally Aminstar thanks for your kind comments about my photos.

Cheers

John
