Insurance question

Specialist photographic equipment is expensive and over the years I would have spent much, much more on premiums than on anything that has been lost or stolen. I've never heard of anyone being mugged for a camera but I live in Glasgow not London

My home policy is 'all risks' for valuables outwith the home.

Are you saying there are more Muggers in London than Glasgow

The best photographic insurers I could find - in terms of reasonable premiums and not too many get-out clauses - is Glover & Howe - who happen to be recommended by Pentax User.

I reckon mugging would be covered as long as you took reasonable care, etc.

I use Aaduki - recommended by ePhotozine. They've (so far) been excellent and competitively priced. They can handle pro insurance too (+ public liability).

I can't recommend a company, since I'm in Holland but I have my gear insured. I did it it mainly for when I fly on holiday - if they bring in another no hand baggage rule whilst I'm away for instance I will have to check my camera gear. Because my insurance policy is designed for the Dutch TV companies it covers theft or damage to checked gear too, which many policies don't. It also covers stuff being stolen whilst you are taking photos - ie someone pinching stuff from your bag (or the whole bag) whilst you are concentrating on getting the perfect shot.
At the time I took it out our home insurance policy didn't cover camera gear away from home, and long not for the amount I have in the home - we already have all the guitars maxed out on the valuables insurance. Travel insurance also usually only covers for a measly amount.

I'd say you'd be covered on your household insurance as "mugging" would be theft.

My view is it's better via your home insurance - but make sure the cover is 'All Risks' for Personal Possessions and covers you in and out of the home. Mugging I am sure would be covered.

Points to watch

1. Are you covered abroad - some include Europe, others are world wide. Some have limits on time away from the UK.

2. If you use your photo equipment on any form of professional basis then your home insurance probably won't provide cover and you will need to go to a specialist insurer as referred to above.

3. Do check this out in detail with your current insurer or broker.

My car was stolen in France a few years ago and I lost all my camera gear the car in insurance only covered the car the contents was covered by the house insurance for 90 days abroad so I got my cheque (£3000) Now living in Spain my house insurance covers me for mugging and and personal things I happen to have with me, (anybody fancy mugging me)
