Not at all, Alan! No point sitting back full of self-satisfaction when there are obvious points for improvement. Comments from such as yourself, David Storm and a few others are what I look forward to when I post on here as I know there'll usually be something constructive to take on board.

The catchlight certainly adds the finishing touch, Alan - these are super.
I remember your comment a couple of years ago when I posted what I thought then were pretty decent tern shots for a first go - you were complimentary in general , but asked "Where are the eyes?" Next time I get up there, I'll be sure to take a flash unit!

Whoever thought single sex schools were a good idea? Don't think I'd even dared speak to a girl at his age! Whichever one is his date, I'm envious!

I go along with the others who have appreciated a personal view of your home area - I always enjoy posts of this nature that give an insight into a place I've not been to or know little of, apart maybe from the obvious, so thanks for these. I've tried in a few posts to give a feel for different locations, though mainly rural landscapes, so I for one will try and get out with the camera into lovely Huddersfield! Good idea, David.

Lovely shots, Alan, and thanks for your thoughts on using SR - there's an undeniable logic to switching it off when you're following a bird in flight anyway. Haven't been up this year, so looking forward to some terns from you, hopefully!

Regards,

I like the contrast between the clean sharpness of the fixtures and the softness of the water, Carl. The rich blues look more Mediterranean than North Sea, too - I'm sure that doesn't happen too often! Simple, but very attractive to look at.
One thing puzzles me in my ignorance - if you were using a 70 - 200mm lens, why does the EXIF data show 50mm as the focal length for some of the shots?

Regards

Wow! These are superb, particularly the last one. Must investigate the effects of ring flash. Did you take any without the flash, for comparison? The slow shutter speed combined with the flash seems to do the trick.

Really enjoying getting to know my Tamron 90mm macro. These were taken on my K-3. Any comments/advice welcome. Hope you like them.

I've been wanting a macro/portrait lens of this type for a while and when the chance of one came up in this forum, it seemed too good to miss. I'll admit to knowing next to nothing about macro/portraiture/flash (amongst lots of other things!), so any pointers, particularly regarding technique, are welcome. I know there are mistakes re exposure, aperture, ISO which I will sort out as I get to understand the lens, but I'm still amazed at how well some of these shots have turned out. Once I've worked out how to use the lens properly, I think it could be really good. These are all RAW images, resized to jpegs with no other processing of any kind, taken with the K-3 and the Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8.

Thanks for looking!
