The best views are not always from the highest points, they say. Hope you like these! Much harsher light for these, of course. K-3 and 18-135mm.

A few days walking around Wasdale last week - never known such lovely weather there. It's a great spot for early morning light, so I hope to do it justice with this selection. So many I could have chosen! All K-3 and Pentax 18-135mm. All comments appreciated.

For anyone still interested, here's a look at a different side of the village - first a few buildings in the centre and then, to finish off, a view from across the valley. Hope I've managed to convey an accurate feel for the place overall!

Since the village is on a steep hillside, thoroughfares zig-zag across the slopes, a lot of them still cobbled. Pedestrians can be more direct, using lots of ginnels that go steeply up and down between terraces. Here's a taste of how to get around!

The old part of Golcar is built on the hillside. Mainly weavers cottages built into the hillside so they are shallow from back to front, while often three or four stories high - at the front; at the back there may be only one or at most two stories above ground level. They all have the characteristic rows of narrow windows to maximise the light, particularly on the upper floors where the weaving etc was done.

Completely agree! So scenic, and very nicely captured here, Nigel. The clarity is very impressive.

I like the first one because of the sharpness in the mirror and the great DoF control. The long gold dress has come out superbly, too - very attractive. The dark background in some of the others, though, almost swallows up the subjects in dark clothes. Was that deliberate? Whether it was or not, if this is a first attempt at flash, I reckon it's pretty good on the whole - I'd be pleased to get results as sharp as some of yours! I haven't got any decent results yet with my flash attempts!

Golcar (pronounced Goker by the locals) is a village near where I live that I've never really looked at before. Had a lovely morning this week just wandering round and discovering all kinds of attractive aspects which I'd like to share. It's actually mentioned in the Doomsday book apparently and the old part is very photogenic. It's built on a steep hillside looking up the Colne Valley, which is where we start - looking out over the valley over and between rooftops. Hope you like these.

Thanks, Don. The bikes I believe are 750cc Millennium Triumph TR7V Tiger motorcycles - had to look that up, knowing nothing at all about motorbikes!
