From opposing vantage points

There is a wonderful, clean, bright, modern car park in Coventry called the Belgrade Plaza. It is 7 floors tall and sits against the ring road from where you have an excellent view. I was struck by the sheer contrast of scenes outside the ring road with those inside it ............

First off, a seedy view from beneath the pillars that support the road

Down below



and up above, where the contrast with the refuse and dilapidation could not be more stark



and outwards, looking at housing that spans four centuries and a lot of trees



contrasting with inwards, where even the Almighty is not immune from inner city wit



Zooming inwards, modernity sits uneasily with mediaeval masonry



Zooming 6 miles outwards, with exactly the same view, Coventry is seen in a rural setting that is slowly being eroded by yet more housing, only being stopped, for the time being, by a golf course



Going back to where we started, on the roof of the car park, the pylon framing the previous view can just be picked out in the very middle of the horizon

I should have mentioned that all except the view through the pylon were taken with an A series 50mm macro lens on a K5. The remaining one was an ancient Asahi preset 135mm on the K5

Coventry Unpicked...an interesting set of images. You could have started something there...

It takes a 'local' with intimate knowledge to identify and photograph scenes such as these, a far cry from the touristy shots. Well done and thanks for sharing this alternative view of a fascinating city.

As already stated - an interesting perspective. I particularly like the juxtaposition of the graffiti with the church spires - very well spotted.

Nice shots, I lived in Coventry for 6 years up until 4 years ago, Its a strange place, I kind of grew to like it.

One of my favorite buildings, near the Train Station, a nice clean and sharp Office Building:

I usually go back at least once a year, I have tended not to take many photos though, I really should on my next trip back up.

X2... Very interesting set, with a specific philosophical point over and above the photographs themselves... a mini photographic essay, if you like... Photographically I really like the first shot, but it's not really about that here... A really thoughtful set...

Perhaps others might add similar scenes of their own towns and cities? They all have their various qualities and the photographer can bring a very personal perspective to bear. Use this one? start a fresh thread? The results could be fascinating.

To answer Walkeja: Perhaps the best thing to have come out of Coventry is a sheer determination to succeed, time after time; century after century.

And, No. I don't know how the elephant's bum got dented.

I go along with the others who have appreciated a personal view of your home area - I always enjoy posts of this nature that give an insight into a place I've not been to or know little of, apart maybe from the obvious, so thanks for these. I've tried in a few posts to give a feel for different locations, though mainly rural landscapes, so I for one will try and get out with the camera into lovely Huddersfield! Good idea, David.

I think it's a great idea, I come from a rural village and will probably struggle a bit but will also enjoy the challenge.
