A trip down memory lane

Having a few days off work and at a loose end yesterday, I decided to drive out to Withernsea on the East Yorks coast. Between the ages of 11-14, I lived 10 miles from here and have fond memories of bike rides there with my friends during the summer holidays.

My impression of Withernsea itself in my memories was of a seaside town on it's last legs - the only thing missing was tumble weed blowing down the main street.

So - what has changed in 40 years? Well - they do now of course have a Tesco - which I believe is mandatory these days - and the world's smallest fairground has been changed in to the world's smallest 9 hole crazy golf course - those aside - precious little - I am in fact amazed - it is now the seaside town that time forgot. How it keeps going must be one of the mysteries of the modern age.

Anybody who knows the place will also know there are not many photographic opportunities - so I limited myself to pointing the camera out to sea and ended up with a small minimalist set of groynes and wind turbines.

As always C+C welcome (please forgive any small sensor spots I have missed - time for a sensor clean!)

Carl

No matter how many lenses I have owned - I have always needed just one more

Interesting set... like the posts vs turbines in 1, and the left/right zig zag composition of 5... the pronounced difference you've emphasised in terms of colour palette of the various segments in each photograph is well spotted and quite unusual...

I like the contrast between the clean sharpness of the fixtures and the softness of the water, Carl. The rich blues look more Mediterranean than North Sea, too - I'm sure that doesn't happen too often! Simple, but very attractive to look at.
One thing puzzles me in my ignorance - if you were using a 70 - 200mm lens, why does the EXIF data show 50mm as the focal length for some of the shots?

John

No idea why the exif is showing 70-200 John - the lens was a Sigma 50-150.

No pictures of the castle Carl I remember the place well, especially the row of amusements near the sea front, spent many hours in there as a kid. I believe that's where I first started spending lots of 10p's on Space Invaders...

Aww, I want to go now

Nice shots BTW.

I like #2 although I would clone out the highlight on the horizon in lined with the upright post.

I'm glad my EXIFs are not the only aberrant blighters round here.
The verbal description sets your mental expectations to something awful. Then you are presented with these fascinating, clean images with fantastic colour contrasts between the various components. This is a set to be proud of.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass
