I assume you would not recommend this either

link

or is it a better bet?

I only want it really to experiment with and to play. I've got a Pentax 55-300mm to use, hence my request for images at 300mm and 400mm.

Thanks,

Howard

Aren't the values approximate square roots

1.4 - 2
1.7 - 3
2 - 4
2.8 - 8
4 - 16

etc.::

and isn't something to do the area of the aperture - hence the square roots.

Cant help with the Islands as theyre always out of season when I go, but you MUST have a "Kipper in a Bun" from Craster just down the road, and no doubt Ken (beginer) will tell you the same about the butchers pork pies in Bambro'
I can also reccomend the Ship Inn in Seahouses for food (and beer)
Thanks for that, however, there is a problem - I don't like fish but the other three will probably sample the Craster kippers. We could very well take up your recommendations for Ship Inn. Thanks.

I can't comment in detail on the two islands, but we did visit Inner farne and it's very negotiable and just covered in birds. The two lenses you have will be fine. For good close ups I think you do need the 55-300mm.

There are lots of companies offering trips and you just have to choose one and see what happens.
Thanks John for that advice, I have come to conclusion that the Inner Farne is best for me, I can't see myself scrambling over the rocks on Staple Island. I will do further research on the boat trips.

Thank you both.

I am watching one of the above on eeebay, does anyone know what sort of reputation these lenses have? Should I not bother? I had thought of taking it on holiday with me had I won the bidding. However, I have a feeling that the technique of using a long telephoto might take some learning. What is the general consensus? Can anyone post images of the same subject taken with a 300mm and with a 400mm lens as I'm never quite sure what the difference would be.

Thanking you all in advance.

We, my wife and I and my sister-in-law and her husband, have booked a cottage for a week in Seahouses, Northumberland at the end of June. I(alone) am very keen to take a trip out to one of the Farne Islands to see the birds and the seals, so my first question is - which is best Inner Farne or Staple Island? In my research I have read that a telephoto lens is not really essential as the birds are so close, so my next questions are, is this right and will my 16-45 and 55-300 be good enough? Third question - which of the companies offering boat trips out of Seahouses is the best?

I am sound of mind(some may question that:! and limb but not very fit, so Staple Island could be negotiated - just.

Look forward to your replies and thanks in advance.

This is one I took last week

straight out of the camera, no PPing. Taken outside the Maritime Museum in Holyhead. Unashamed link http://www.holyheadmaritimemuseum.co.uk/.

I had thought of entering this in last week's competition until I reread the title - I thought it said "Made of Metal"

Is this better or worse?

The speed is wrong but I was actually leaning on the railings as I took these. That's my very weak excuse anyway

I'll stop boring you now and go and make a cup of tea.

Thanks one and all.

Howard,
5 or 6 ft away is very close. Are you sure you calculated the distance correctly? And what lens are you using? I see you shot at 300mm focal distance, I would assume that you ought to get a stunner of a shot.
Get the settings right and you will have a cracker of a shot.
My experience is, assuming you are using a zoom, to use it at a shorter focal length, this is in case they were really that close.
I might be wrong here in which case I do apologise and someone please correct me, my experience is still limited.

Amin
It's quite possible I did underestimate, on recollection perhaps it was 10ft or so. No need to apologize Amin, I agree I lost a brilliant opportunity. My mind must have been on other things, like getting out of the cold wind

Thank you for all your comments and advice. It must be my eyes and possibly this monitor as I didn't think that they were out of focus, soft perhaps. However I asked for your C & C I accept it. I must go again to do better (sounds like my school report:!

They were probably a long way away as well. There's some on Carr Mill Dam in St.Helens usually diving for fish around the middle of the dam.

Edit: Although looking at the first shot, it looks fairly close.
