Thanks everybody for responding and for your comments and advice, I've learnt a few things from this. I currently don't use any filters but I was unaware of the "problem" of filters with a 55-300, thanks David (Storm). I was also very pleased to get Steve(Ledger)'s comments about not using filters in his photography, also good advice on using a skylight filter to protect from any sea spray if we're on the coast - we are hoping to do a bit of whale watching near Ballina and/or Byron Bay. I shall definitely take RichandFleur's advice and enjoy Australia, and hopefully come away with some good images.

I know it's winter down under when we go but I do hope that the sun will make an appearance for us.

Thanks all once again.

Especially from our Australian friends or any member who has been to Australia.

In 4 weeks time my good lady and I are going "down under" on a "trip of a lifetime", visiting our son in Northern NSW (near Lismore), before going to Sydney and then to a cousin's in Melbourne. I am taking a K3 with my 55-300 and 16-45. We will also be stopping in Singapore with our nephew out wards and homewards.

My question is - Should I put a UV or skylight filter on? (I know the accepted wisdom is not to use filters with DSLRs, however....).

Any other suggestions or advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks from a very occasional poster.

Hi,

Like you I am a very infrequent poster, but I "lurk" most days!!!

I'm glad there's somebody else who likes shipping. Have you seen this site for ideas -

http://www.shipsofthemersey.me.uk/index?/category/445-solent_shipping_sept_2016

contains some brilliant shots. However I was hoping to be able to extract the exif but I couldn't, perhaps I shouldn't try.

Here's one I took in Venice a few years ago

I think the best way to learn is to use the old adage - "If at first you don't succeed - try and try again"

Doesn't answer your question, but hope it helps.

Croeso cynnes.

What part of the lovely island are you from? I was born and bred in Holyhead, still visit regularly, live in Cheshire now.

Hi Stuey,

Great idea but once again I don't think I'll be able to make it but I'll keep an eye on this thread.

If you want castles and coast why not try Conwy then over Sychnant Pass down to Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan some nice bits of coast there. Also great views as you go over Syschnant. Alternatively you could go down the Conwy valley through Llanrwst and on to Bettws, but take the B road. Some thoughts for you.

Enjoy whatever,

Cheers,

Howard

These were taken last Friday evening, before the cloud came in and stayed, with a K5 ttached to Meade 12 inch telescope and a borrowed lunar filter and focussing done through Live View.

This 1st one has no cropping some tweaking of shadows and highlights and finally flipped vertically.

Mare Serenitatis. This is a rather big crop - obviously.

Also took these two of Jupiter, the one of the rings is heavily PPed.

This is the first time I've tried anything like this, I think I'll have another go sometime.

I thought I'd try linking to my Flickr account. Seems to work. However, I have a question - how can I limit viewing to this single image? Sorry, probably wrong place to ask a question.

Eclipse

Sorry also to repeat a gallery image here.
