But the OS are using skewed data - they admit they're only a mere 45 miles from tidal water (they're virtually coastal!) so Aylesbury can beat that by a clear 10 miles or so. We win!!!

No interest from me I'm afraid. I'm not a pro and I view photography purely as a hobby, once we reach the point that cameras are smarter (and take better pictures) than us then where's the fun?

Welcome to the forum - some of those older lenses may be a little "clunky" in use but the results are often sublime. The 50/1.7's especially are fantastic lenses.

Welcome Steve.

Apparently Derby is the furthest point in the UK from any coastline and you work offshore
Was always told that honour belonged to us Aylesburians! That's why we hardly post any seaside photos!
'tis true! We were always taught that we (Aylesbury) were the furthest point from the coast at school - unless coastal Britain is collapsing into the sea at an alarming rate I reckon Derby has a fight on its hands...

No more or less useless than any other life-sized sculpture. Bit tricky to display on a bookshelf though I'd guess...

What does the "*" mean with Pentax lenses?
Since the Pentax M Series lenses in the 1970's, Pentax have used the "*" designation on their top grade professional lenses. The current DA* lenses all feature fast maximum apertures, SDM "silent" focussing and full weather sealing.

Since the launch of the DA17-70/f4 the SDM part is no longer unique to the DA*'s, and there are non-* lenses with large apertures so this isn't unique either, however, the weather sealing remains a unique feature and should be handy for shooting sports in all weathers.

I've never used a DA*50-135 but I've never seen a bad word written about it and all the pictures I see seem exquisite - it'd certainly be top of my shopping list for floodlit football duties!

As for 135mm not being long enough, why not try limiting your current 70-300 to the 70-135 range the next time you're out and see if you really miss those extra millimetres? The DA* will certainly be a big jump up in quality so as long as you're not planning A3 sized prints I reckon a little cropping here and there should still yield satisfactory results.
