DPR Best DSLR of the year vote
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
IMO Pentax is stuck in the middle and should differentiate its products if they want to grow. In the space between M43 and FF Pentax only has APS-C. very crowded and with a lot of similar offerings. I think the example of the Sony A7 is valid: it is a different product that can attract also other brands' owners. Same with the Olympus OM-D and FF cameras. But I think it is much less likely that a Canon user will buy a Pentax K-3 over a Canon 700D or a Nikon user over a D7100…. They are very similar offerings.

May I suggest that whatever tablet you get should have a 3G slot for a SIM, an internal microSD card slot and the ability to connect an SD Carder via the On The Go (OTG) connection facility. Then you can, if you want/have to, send files to your home/"the cloud" or wherever when you are anywhere within the relevant 3G catchment areas - then you can (almost!) be sure that something really valuable can be "off-loaded" to somewhere "safe", as you may not be able to do that with a WiFi-only tablet. If you have a smartphone with a data plan you can (in most cases) also use the phone 3G/4G connection with your tablet and save your self a separate fee….

an old Spectrum ZX80I only have fond memories of the Spectrum 48k. The Z80 processor was my introduction to programming in assembly. I wonder how many other members were introduced to the joys of computing by this machine :DI had one! But i wrote a program for it in Basic. But to be frank i lost inferest fairly soon, i could not really find a use for it. Maybe i was already too old. Those were the days of Spectrum vs Commodore 64.... memories!

I don't own any Apple products, but I can't see them stumblingThey are already stumbling. Take a look at their recent sales figures. Regards DavidDavid, we do not know what the future will bring, but saying that Apple is stumbling is a bit overstated….. Sales are not growing as before, and profit margins are lower ("only" 37%). The fact that they produce "premium" products and a lot of the growth is happening in cheaper categories, might explain some of that, plus the fact that they have not come out with something wildly innovative after the iPad. You might not like their "closed environment", but just think how much of what we know today id driven by innovation created by Apple….. the iPod, iTunes, Appstore, iPhone, iPad….. whether you like it or not, we all benefit from what they created. And I think it is right they price their products at a premium. back to topic: if you just buy a tablet for a task, then probably anyone will do. But if you like your computer to be in sync with your phone and tablet, if you want to stream music, films, photos to any device, etc…. Then it is much easier with an Apple environment just out of the box. You can do the same with any other system, but t requires a lot more work….

I use both Apple IOS and Android (and my wife's windows phone from time to time…). A while back I walked into a shop selling mobile devices and asked them about differences. Their short reply was "if you like to customise your device and are more technical, buy an Android, if you don't and just want the easiest experience, buy an Apple". IMO this summarises it well and it is also my experience. There are no great differences, but Apple products are the simplest to use, this is probably the bright side of the proprietary and expensive environment. (and are the best looking products, for those who care) To me the most complex is Windows, I just cannot follow its logic. But I know people who love Windows phones and think they are the easiest to use (the ones I know are pretty technical people, though). So it does really depend on your own preferences and ways of working. But I have never found an Apple device user who would claim their device is not easy to use…. My recommendation would always be to try different tablets (friends? relatives?) before selecting the one that works for you. BR, Giorgio

iF you want live in Apple's jail, get an iPad Air but you are way better off with an Android tabletHi, can you please elaborate? Why are you better off with an android tablet? I think it really depends on personal preferences and technical abilities
K5 vs K3
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
Weirdly I posted in the ongoing thread in the general section only a few days ago about the Nikon Df. It's a lovey looking camera 8)It is a lovely looking camera, and class leading in high ISO performance, but probably not the best for landscape. For that other FF cameras are rated much higher, for instance the Sony A7(r) or Nikon 610/800.
Why no DPR reviews...

i am also surprised by the K-3 lead in the poll, considering there are already 3000+ people voted. did all the pentaxian had a secret meeting to make sure the k-3 stays on top? :PThat happened on this very forum a few years back ... there was a poll on some web site (manufacturer based IIRC) where you could keep going back day after day to vote ... someone posted it on here and Pentax won by a very large margin. :wink:Well, it's on the front page of the other forum.....

What do you have to trade-in to get £200 back?I think my son got £225 for a K20D body p/x for a K3 body. But i guess that must have been before the £200 offer? I assume that means £200 above the normal trade-in value.

New PC for Digital Photo stuff - Advice please :)

[quote:3496ace15f="cabstar"] I'm not up to date with windows machines now as I went mac a whilst back finding win 8 just way to frustrating to use, which is something else to think about if you have not used win 8 yet.+1 for a move to macs. I got fed up with buying a windows based flying machine, only for it to grind to a snails pace after a few months. Unfortunately you can't get one for £500. However once you have one you wont need to replace it for many years. You must be doing something wrong. :) I built my current PC with Win 7 in 2010 and it hasn't slowed down one iota. My previous PC I built in 2002 which ran XP and did so until 2010. A whole 8 years and that never slowed down either.I only replaced it because modern software demands were outstripping it. I can't understand all this Mac superiority. Macs aren't superior. neither are PC's, they are as good and as bad as each other
Smeggy, are you using a Mac? I am asking because there are significant differences....

Yes, they are more expensive initially, but for me they have been cheaper in the long term :)
+1 more. I fully agree with the fact that Macs are more expensive, but have a much longer life.

There are very reliable battery manufacturers and very reliable retailers selling them. They are probably very profitable items for camera manufacturers, so no wonder they want to protect their sales. But i cannot see how moves that limit competition can be good for consumers?

I have for sale my Sigma 2X EX DG APO teleconverter in excellent conditions. I am selling it as I do not any longer have the Sigma 100-300 f4 with which I used it. It comes with front and rear caps, one original, the other not. I had this for sale on a previous post, but thought it would be clearer if I started a new clean one only for this. I am looking for 125 euros, plus 12 euros shipment to EU countries Some pictures of the converter:

It's very simple really If I use a Pentax lens on a Sony body does that stop me then being a Pentax user??? Likewise if I use a Sigma lens on a Pentax body does that make me a Sigma or a Pentax user??? So is it the camera body that makes you a Pentax user or the lens, as it cannot be the sensor as then we will be back to square one as all Sony users:roll::roll::roll:Maybe Ricoh could have a Pentax rebadged A7 with a full-featured lens adapter that would allow for AF and metering with Pentax lenses….. Imagine…

If you want to discuss forum policy, by all means drop me a PM and I'll explain it in more detail. It wouldn't be quite right to say that giofi, but this isn't the place for it. By all means drop me a PM.John, I understand the Forum policy, fair enough. But as we are not allowed to discuss other makes, we should also avoid comparing Pentax cameras to others, as facts cannot be shown. It is a recurring phenomenon on this forum that the latest Pentax model is always the best camera on the market and it can only be improved by the next Pentax model. I wonder what will happen when/if Pentax will release a FF camera…. we will still say that it is not a worthwhile upgrade? BR

Better to buy a K-3, which is a superb camera and which out-resolves most FF cameras anyway.John, although this is a Pentax forum, I think it would be fair to give factual comments. Wouldn't it be right to say that the K-3 out-resolves some FF cameras, and certainly not the ones discussed in this thread! Here a

Can someone explain the procedure/pitfalls of going somewhere cheap like USA or (you tell me), buying something, throwing away the packaging, using it on your hols and just bringing it home? Or maybe getting someone who lives there to bring it back next time they come home to their family? You have a duty free allowance when traveling from a non-EU country to the EU. I believe in the UK is £390. So if you bought goods up to that amount you would not have to pay duties or taxes.
