Shoddy customer service by Ricoh/Pentax
Posted in General Photographic Discussion
Algi, I think you're totally missing the point I'm not that bothered about the software. I was just annoyed with the poor customer service and the couldn't care less attitude. CD with software came with the camera, if cd is lost there is nothing we can do for you then. That sounds to me like hard luck we couldn't care less.I would report it to Pentax management and hopefully their reaction is different. Most likely they have outsourced their help desk and this looks like somebody did a poor job. But I also agree that an upgrade model that requires a cd in 2018 is obsolete, there are no excuses for that

With a PC just adding two extra pieces of memory to the existing two is unreliable. Your supposed to sell the existing two and replace with 2 or 4 matched ones. --That is not the case with Macs afaik, they should be in pairs, but they can be different pairs. That is what I have atm

And another vote for ordering your iMac with the min memory from Apple and then adding memory on your own, it is really very easy and a fraction of the cost. the iMac 27 has four slots, of which 2 occupied. You can place another two memory modules in the free slots. Just remember to add 2 modules, AFAIK Mac memory goes in pairs for performance reasons. So you can buy 2X4GB or 2x8GB or 2x16GB This all assumes it's a 27" model

I would definitely go for an SSD drive rather than the standard 1TB fusion drive. The 1TB fusion drive only has 28GB SSD as paulcliff noted, that is very little to help improve performance. I would go with the largest SSD drive I can afford and then as prices of external SSD drives are decreasing very quickly invest in a larger external SSD drive at some point. IMO the internal SSD drive is both important from a performance point of view and to ensure longevity of your iMac. I have a 2011 iMac and it was becoming slow, so last year I invested in an internal SSD drive and it was a change from night to day.

A lens from the past

On Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinon_Industries Although I think Vic knows more about them than whoever wrote the Wikipedia piece... :D It certainly was available in Italy in the 80's (and we did not have Dixons ) It was one of the cheaper alternatives to Pentax, I chose a Cosina instead...

WTB Lenses for 645N

I am looking for a new lens for my 645N, in case you would have one you do not need. I only have the FA 75mm, so I would be interested in either a wide angle or a tele. As a wide angle either a 35 or 55 mm and as a tele a 120 or 150 mm lens. Shipment to Finland and I would pay by PayPal, to Euro countries also bank transfer might be possible. Thanks!

[quote:3496ace15f="dcweather"]As people that read most stuff on here they will know my disappointment with focus speed and tracking of small objects at high telephoto and have drifted towards a Nikon solution. But this camera just seemed so much better made and would certainly be my first choice for full frame. But what can you tell us about K1 AF performance? Are you saying, "Never Mind the Autofocus, Feel the Build Quality?"But Canon and Nikon have 2 different options - Pentax is still a bit limited in that area Speed - Canon have 1 DX and 7Dii - non-speed 6D/5Dii or 80D Nikon have (or will have) for speed D5 and D500, non-speed D810/D750/D610/D7200 So basically Pentax are between the 2, until we get the multiple choices that Casonykon users have there will be 'compromises' I've basically held off buying the D810.[/quote] Pentax have been very clear that this is a camera aimed at current Pentax users. So I guess they chose those characteristics that most Pentax users will look for. Those who look for speed are probably not Pentax users... ;)

With all due respect, I think you are missing the point. Customer service has nothing to do with the law. Consumers will judge you by your behaviour when things go wrong, whatever the reason. If you reach out and help your customer, you will win their loyalty and they will sell your products to others. A company expecting a consumer to prove that a camera is broken for a manufacturing fault before giving service would not go very far.... :D Bottom line, I concur that Pentax did not earn any points with their lack of interest in their client..... Ohh....look.. From 30 days to six months If you discover the fault within the first six months from delivery, it is presumed to have been there from the time of delivery - unless the retailer can prove otherwise. During this time it's up to retailer to prove that the fault wasn't there at the time of delivery - it's not up to you to prove that it was. If an attempt at repair or replacement has failed, you have the right to reject the goods for a full refund or price reduction - if you wish to keep the product. No deduction can be made from a refund in the first six months following an unsuccessful attempt at repair or replacement. The only exception to this rule is motor vehicles where a reasonable reduction may be made for the use you've already had of the vehicle. If you'd prefer to keep the goods in question you can request an appropriate price reduction. Six months or more After the first six months the burden is on you to prove that the product was faulty at the time of delivery. In practice, this may require some form of expert report, opinion or evidence of similar problems across the product range. The above is taken from The Consumer Rights Act 2015 Look, I wasn't having a go directly at NeilP, but consumers in general. It seems most are too quick to rant and have a go at everybody, threaten them with "Negative PR" and think that is all right.. Regarding your "Bad Food" analogy, why not complain to the chef....he cooked it....the waiter/waitress delivered it......That's like complaining to the postman for faulty goods delivered to your door...... And chill out...

It really isn't unusual for companies to take six weeks or longer to arrive at a conclusion about an object sent for repair under guarantee. Lenovo took all of the six weeks maximum they said it would take to assess my computer and inform me that the screen was irrepairable, something I knew the day I sent it off. Canon took 10 weeks to inform His Nibs that his camera was beyond repair, and then refused to replace it, but offered a voucher for a new one. We eventually got our money back from them but it took some doing. The retailer in question was less than helpful. His Nibs got a Pentax after that. It will get sorted, one way or another, and in the meantime I think we should butt out and let the parties involved get on with sorting it as best they can. Hopefully Neil will come back a update this thread when a conclusion has been reached.Gwyn, I think it isn't unusual for some companies to provide this type of customer service. That is why it is very useful for people to post their experience. There are other computer manufacturers who would repair you laptop in a matter of days, and when you select your laptop you might want to be able to compare what is the actual customer experience by reading what real users have to say. Leading consumer goods companies spend a significant amount of money in monitoring social sentiment and what people say on social media. This is because most buyers will do a web search when deciding to buy something and they will rely on reviews and comments more than to most other sources of information. Leading companies would even react to posts like this, as they know this will cost them much more in lost sales than the repair cost. So I believe the OP was absolutely right to share his experience, everyone can then reach their own conclusions. My two cents...
What lenses for the new FF
Posted in Lenses for Pentax Cameras
I am curious to see what the performance of FF lenses will be on the new camera, especially older lenses that were designed for analog cameras....
K3II specs leaked online...
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
This is based on the fact that top spec models from other makes, those used by sports, news and commercial studio professionals, don't have pop-up flashes either .... These users will be sophisticated flash shooters either with hotshoe accessory flashes, using studio equipment, or multi-flash setups with radio triggering. They don't need a pop-up. Actually there are pro cameras with pop-up flashes (D810....). But I guess this was more a matter of choice, in a camera of this size you probably have to choose whether you want a flash or an astrotracer.... When the FF will come out it might be down to the same question, do they want to have a size advantage and therefore no flash, or have the flash? I do not see Pentax competing primarily in the pro market, so I hope it will have a flash.
Do you worry about 'bit rot'

I believe that archiving all content in digital format is today the safest way to ensure it is preserved. If all pictures and videos are saved in a standard format, it should be easy to convert them when formats and archiving methods will change. I recently copied all my digital and analog video tapes and it was lengthy but straightforward. I am still in the process of digitizing all my negatives and dias, though.
