In my experience (not scientific, purely subjective), when I've shot CCD sensor cameras in good light with good lenses, I've felt they can outperform similar spec CMOS sensors.

Get into anything other than perfect light however, and CMOS tends to win hands down.

Quick question, I currently run Lightroom 3 (think it's at 3.6 now). In order to be eligible for an upgrade license for Lightroom 5 (£57 - bargain) it says "must own previous version of Lightroom".

Does anyone know if this means the immediately previous version of Lightroom (i.e. LR 4) or any version of Lightroom?

I'd have preferred the central arch not to have had its top cut off, would happily lose some of the expanse of water for this.

I do love the colour and mood of the shot though.

Which strap is it you're using with the jacket there Pauly?

The contrast between the wild chaotic tree and the uniform soldier trees stands out for me. Only thing I'd do is crop a bit from the top and the right to remove the black splodge that is instrusive in the top right
Agree with this.

Overall though, I really like it for the contrast between the one wild tree and all the others. Plus I don't think the HDR is overdone.

I would have dumped this shot from the get go.

Sorry
That's a bit harsh I think.

A bit of cropping would sort out any issues I think.

It must have something going for it to get shortlisted.

Despite what I've said above (as lets be fair, no camera gets everything absolutely right, many of those points can apply to more popular cameras) I actually do applaud Pentax for releasing the K-01, as at least they were trying to do something a bit different whilst retaining great backwards compatibility.

What I think they should have done is released the K-01 as strictly Limited Edition alongside a more traditional mirrorless body (and/or a Ricoh GXR K-mount module), rather than pin all their APS-C mirrorless hopes on it. That way it could have been received for what it is, a bold joint venture between a camera company and a designer.

And the positioning of the focus assist lamp is pretty poor.

And it lacks twin controls dials.

Regardless of what you think about the aesthetics of the K-01 I don't find anything inelegant about its design. Bear in mind I'm talking about function - cameras are for taking images, not looking at!
I'd have to say that you can't consider design without at least considering aesthetics, certainly when it comes to consumer goods. This is, after all, a tangible item.

It's also not as if you can only make something elegantly functional if it looks like it's been hit with the ugly stick. Lazy design in my book if they can't make something that looks good and performs well. With the tools at designers disposal these days there really is no excuse.

Re: the function of the K-01 specifically, I'd say not incorporating some sort of viewfinder when the body is fairly big already to be inelegant, at the very least not using an AMOLED display when there is no option of a viewfinder.

Also, a better thumb grip in the space on the back would have been nice, and better placement of the green button.

And the rubber flaps aren't great.
