Don
like it a touch more!
I saw this in Ephotzine:

and was thinking some kind of abstract, effect or collage done with your original image would look amazing...

doesn't the image above remind you of a human eye, with the eye where the girls face is and the swirl designs comming off it look like eyelashes?

I like it.
only problem I have is this:
sometimes I hardly know when a piece is complete.
as it is ,perhaps, it is really good. but I keep looking at it and thinking what if I took a shot like that and did this...or added it to that..perhaps if I...

It's really good, but... what do YOU think?

what are the manual controls for that flash like?
the best use for ringflash, imho is contrast control/fill.....
so huge gobs of power, aren't really needed....

A shutter speed of 2 seconds sounds rather long. Especially if the blacksmith is working. You should try flash to freeze movement.
good point, I was hoping to get some movement in a fire that just wasn't going very well,, and xmas tree lights at f9...

but the flash is on the subject, and should freeze motion fairly well, depends on the ambient light....if you could block the ambient off the subject...it would work no matter how long the exposure...

so in my set up above, dimming the ambient, dimming the flash output and then opening up the f-stop, and dialing in a faster shutter speed would be a good idea for a moving subject! provided you can keep the highlights in the fire from blowing out....

I was sharing general ideas about mixing the lighsources the op had on hand for the shot he was planning...
fire, incandescent, and some type of daylight.....

that's the key to it all, trying things and having fun.
I find when playing with flash, and I hope my image above helps to convey it, is this...
it's really challenging, to light a scene in such a way as to get decent imagery, without having it look like it was flash....

Thanks Don, they are very effective and shows me a side of fisheye that I didn't know existed. The one of the slide is very effective.

Only two ladies keen to get the bouquet then The one in red should play for the Canadian cricket team.

a small barn dance is not our typical wedding client/venue, but they were such great people!
We Canadians generally step on crickets, except for some, of Japanese ancestry, who won't step on them because they are considered good luck. We don't have time to organize crickets into teams, especially during HOCKEY season.

many pros felt having a pop up flash on a pro slr was absurd. left to us, the evolution of pro equipment would grind to a halt.

truth is Joe amature decides to go buy a top of the line camera, thinking it will get him better pics, has neither the time nor inclination to take a photography course.
If Pentax doesn't have the bells and whistles, he'll buy Canon.

how many noobs show up in this very forum asking very basic questions about setting up/ using thier dslr? what more proof do you need?

Very clever - thanks Don.

Any examples you can share?

Mike
here's an example that hides the fisheye effect fairly well:

here's one from a recent wedding:

then in the video, the above image gets panned and zoomed in closer:
