Not sure about PS elements, but in PS Adj>Levels, hold down alt key (image goes black) and move the RHS slider under the histogram to the left you will see the highlights come through.Repeat for the shadows by moving the LHS slider to the right you can then make the final adjustment with the middle slider.
More contrast can be added in curves.

Hope that works.

Try this little exercise, open up an image in PS >Edit >Assign Profile and tick the preview box, then try Adobe RGB 98,sRGB and Pro PhotoRGB in turn.
Same image, same programme but the differences is amazing.

Iso 800 is uber overkill! The pictures look like they were taken in daytime and the flash has killed off any atmosphere in the shots.
Agreed. Flash at Gigs is not a good idea....But if you must. I notice the ceiling is low and white the best diffuser around if you avoid reflections off the light and air conditioning fittings.

I still use white styrofoam cups, dollar store drink bottles and when I'm really fancy, I have a white measuring cup with a curved mirror glued to the bottom, usually use those with the 10-17 mm fisheye.

other than that, white card and rubber band.

I'm cheap.
I am with Don on this one, I use foam or the carton of long life milk cut down into strips of different lengths to fit my Metz (silver side to flash). They work very well and the milk carton one is always a talking point. Here are some examples LINK

No. This was taken with 16-45 on tripod and the untouched files were fed into PS. Manual focus and exposure were used. That is a full 180 deg inside Durham Cathedral. I think you will have problems with a tiled floor.I have used the method Barrie describes outdoors and it worked well.

I thought the branch and the green were a bit distracting so removed them with magic wand & quick mask. The background could be painted a bit or the bird dropped into a new background.Levels & curves used on the bird.
From a competition point of view this is not a natural history shot now.
