Looks like I was lucky then!

I run AVG, and have it set to auto-update, and I run 64 bit Windows 7, but havn't had any problems.

I dumped AVG a while back and now use Avira free, seems I made a good choice.

I used to use the full suite from Symmantec many years ago (bloatware plus !), then moved on to AVG but found it slowed the PC to a crawl, next used Panda but that got to be too expensive/invasive. I've now been using the free programs Avast + Zone Alarm on WinXP for the past 2 years and they work well.

Free antivirus - you get what you pay for!

I did have AVG on my old laptop but this one has the free PC guard from Virgin which works very well (I'm in IT support and won't have anything that is problematic)
Well I say free, I still pay for it as part of my Virgin subscription.......
My PC did once have bloatware (aka Norton) but even that now has PC Guard too.

AVG does have a tendency to run an EXE that hogs all the processing for at least 30 mins rendering your computer useless until it calms down. Only by adding a further 1GB of RAM did the old lappy start performing again.

As for OS, I am still an XP user, and a happy one at that. But the time will come to upgrade to Win7 at some point, hopefully not that soon.

I used AVG until they started scanning the entire internet with every search you made a while ago, now using Avast.

As a happy Ubuntu Linux/GIMP/Pidgin IM/Openoffice/etc user I have to challenge "you get what you pay for". I have more hassle with Windows and paid-for products than with open source!

Non of of these AV/Anti-Malware programs seem to actually do anything apart from slow your computer D - O - W - N!

I'm surprised how easy it is for websites to just download your history and spy on you.... sell your data etc http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11899092

Running Win 7 and Avira I've only had one problem, that seemed to be a bug piggy backing a genuine Microsoft download 2 months back.

The system stopped, needed a re-install and the offending update had been deleted/repaired by Microsoft.

Since then no problem.

Last time I used Norton it took a fresh install of XP to get rid of all it's traces!

I use Avast on the PC and Microsoft Security Essentials on the net book. I threw the trial version of Norton off as the first thing I did on the netbook.

I gave up paying for virus protection because my PC was so slow and bogged down by it always.

I used AVG for a while, but like Avast better, and like MSE even more.

Lots of virus checkers - including those you pay for - throw up mistakes of one sort or another on occasion. It just happens to be AVGs turn, and with a real doozy.

AVG used to be brilliant upto maybe 3 years ago. Small foot print and low memory usage. My Anti Virus / Malware defense consisted of AVG for Virus, Outpost Pro for Firewall and Lavasoft for the Malware bit and it worked pretty well, never got stung with anything. Then all these companies started to addon bits, AVG got into the Malware / Privacy area, Outpost tacked on Anti Virus and Lavasoft expanded into another 'Security Suite' and each was lesser for it. I've looked hard at most of the Anti Virus programs out there and settled on Avira, it does all of above and has the smallest footprint memory wise and services wise. It does cost £25 a year or so but if I have to recommend one nowadays thats what I say. Microsoft Security Essentials has its place but I would trust Avira that little bit extra
