Nice bird but I feel you need some more contrast, and possibly a touch of noise reduction for that background.

Thanks Andrew & Tim.

Is this better, Tim?
I didn't want to over-cook it!

Nice shot, lucky to get so close and from the front as well
The 2nd one is an improvement. I take it that this is a crop
of part of the frame. It shows the lens is sharp, but you
might have gone just a bit too big for a jpg on the screen.
A little bit smaller would look better.

If you are printing it you would just have to keep the print
smaller than the point where the noise starts to show.

Could you post the entire uncropped image so that we can get an idea of how much this is cropped?

Adjust away!
But please give me an idea of your processing steps so that I, & others, can look & learn!

Thanks for all the interest,

It's a bit small to have a proper go at it but here's my effort, all done in Lightroom 3:

Thanks for that, Tim.

Don't you think the bird looks a little "flat"?

Hmm, it looks okay to me, but I could easily be a minority of one I get told fairly regularly that some of my photos are flat, perhaps there's something wrong with my eyes!

I think that where my problem lies is that I'm trying to combine my love of both birds & photography....But on a pretty tight budget & several attempts to run before I can walk!

What I have learnt from both this Post & "Berry, berry cold", is to accept my limitations, both in equipment & skills.

I can keep saving for the former & keep honing the latter, with the help from all my colleagues here.

I don't know about other Pentax sites.

This one will do me!

Many thanks for your interest, efforts, understanding & patience.

I will continue to offer up my efforts for your Comments & Criticism.

The bird looks flat because the light was flat, the problem here is by boosting the contrast etc to try and liven up the bird the green on the branches is being emphasized and as a result the eye is taken away from the bird so its still going to look dull by comparison.

You need good light to really bring out a Dunnocks plumage, its a shame really because catching one sat in a tree can be a bit od a rarity compared to other species.

Heres my take.

I used an oval selection feathered to about 50pixels and adjusted the levels on the bird and the background seperately.

Dont accept limitations, beat them.

EDIT: PS, I took the liberty of adding a catchlight to its eye

Thanks, Alan. That does look a lot better.
And thanks for the tip re working different areas.
Yes, the dunnock is usually skulking around the bottom of hedgerows, etc.
It was good to see him(?) just outside the window!

And thanks to you as well, Gareth!
I'm not withdrawing really. It was that I felt I was getting nowhere with these two posts, having been pleased with them enough to post.......

But when I say "C&C Welcome", I DO MEAN IT!

I've been taking photographs for the last 40+ years, but I seem to get into a mucking fuddle with the technology, & all.

But I shall persevere &, as you say Alan, continue to do my best to beat my limitations.

With your help!

Thanks again,

Roger.

Mine is a slightly different crop but much the same processing wise.
Did it a while ago but forgot to post it.

If it were mine I would take a bit more time and take that other branch out as well.

One (constructive hopefully) observation Roger - any increase in saturation needs to be done carefully and conservatively. In Lightroom for eg, I might tweak i. brightness, ii. vibrance and iii. contrast (in that order, and by decreasing amounts) before I go near saturation.

Alan's observation is key here IMO - the light is the pivotal factor.
