Grateful thanks one and all for your valuable input. Being without a camera I was seriously considering taking the plunge this weekend, however, there is much merit in the logic of stalling until September (buy in haste, sulk at leisure) to see what unfolds.

There has been much speculation about the impending announcement of a new release, though as is often the case, the latest iteration will doubtless wear a premium price tag! The knock-on effect however, should hopefully see a healthy reduction (for the buyer at least) in the price of old stock where the cost of a new IIs might fall towards the £600 mark.

Whatever the latest and greatest has to offer, the release date isn't perhaps the best time to acquire it, the prudent purchase then would be the tried and tested IIs which is more than capable of accommodating my needs for the foreseeable future. Ahh decisions, decisions!!!

Thanks again every one...

This is a report from this weeks Amateur Photographer:-

Quote:
A ‘new breed’ of photographers aged 30 and over are shunning camera phones to invest in high-end photographic equipment instead, according to a new study.

Insurance firm Photoguard reports a 88% rise in 30-34-year-olds taking out specialist photographic insurance over the past five years.

The internal study - drawn from Photoguard data relating to more than 10,000 people - found that these photographers own £5,748 worth of camera gear.

The results also show a rise in young people investing in photography - with a 39% increase in 20-24 year-olds taking out specialist insurance from 2007-2012.

Cameras are insured for an average of £1,108 with accessories such as lighting, tripods and lenses adding an extra £1,192 to the total value of insurance cover.

Commenting on the findings, Photoguard boss Adrian Scott said: ‘Our data suggests camera phones do not cut it for everybody and an increasing number of photographers are prepared to kit themselves put with more expensive professional gear.

My vote would be K-5IIs with no hesitation.

Thank you ver much David, that's just the sort of positive recommendation I'm looking for to help me justify the extra cost of K5 IIS.

I'm in the market for a new camera but can't quite make up my mind. Having sold my K5 my thoughts were to progress to a K5 IIs which I notice SRS currently have on a bank holiday special at the very attractive price of £725.00. However, they are also selling the K30 at £419.00 at which price also makes it a very worthy contender for consideration.

So my question is; has anyone had any hands-on experience with both the K5 IIs and K30 who are willing to share their opinions of them?

The Sigma 8-16 is a fabulous lens IMHO. It might not have the EX classification but it is extremely well built never-the-less.

If I could only keep on lens it would be my 8-16, I love it....

I hope you won't mind if I throw something else into the mix. I also acquired the excellent 18-135 recently though, I prefer my Sigma 17-70, which probably leaves my lovely Sigma 24-135 f2.8-4.5 surplus to requirements.
I say probably because I may yet still keep the latter in preference over the 18-135. At the moment however, my thoughts are to sell the Sigma 24-135 in case you might be interested...

I have a pair of Pentax Papilio binoc's which I love. They aren't particularly expensive, come in two flavours, 6.5x21 & 8.5x21 of which I have the former. They are very small, discreet and lightweight and are unique in that they have a close focus ability of 1.6ft, which is great for nature watching of such as bugs and butterflies if you are interested in that sort of thing, or, just examining your toe nails without popping a disc. lol...

Seriously though, they are worth checking out...

I too own the Sigma 8-16 and it has to be my favorite lens. I you want to go wide, 8mm is as wide as it gets and SRS have it at a very good price.

Just take a look at the 8-16club link it's impressive. Just don't get hung about using filters though.

Goog luck with your search...

I don't have this lens so can't comment specifically on it's particular idiosyncrasy, however, if the problem is uniform across the aperture and focal length, then perhaps the simplest solution when using the lens would be to set the exposure on the K5 to minus 1EV!

Can't comment on their performance & suitability for use at air shows but there are some reasonably priced offerings here:- link here:- link and here:- link and this also link looks to be quite a good deal albeit a little more expensive but it's new with warranty, offers extra reach and appears to have good reviews link.

Good luck with your search...
