Re: Nikon - only referring to speed of AF in "servo" for locking on and tracking birds. Other aspects of K3 are hard to beat and probably can't be for the price.

Maybe their research showed not everyone wants wifi so left it out to keep the price down.
They employed that ethos with GPS and it ended up that those of us who want it had to pay £250 per camera and lose the hotshoe.

I'm not into this modular approach. Adding GPS and Wifi into the camera without "extras" wouldn't cost that much and would give the camera a perceived good value even for those that didn't initially ( or ever ) want those features.

How may still shooters look at the video specs of a camera and get positive about them even though they probably won't really use them. But the option is there.

.... and WIFI seems to built into many low end compacts so can't be that expensive?

Thanks for all this advice. Ties in quite well with what is being said in current (concurrent?) discussion on the other forum. I haven't tried the expanded AF points yet but will. There is some conflicting info though, e.g someone said never use back button AF in C (I do) but use half pressed shutter only! I think for BIF we are going to have to try the different variables and find what works best for our own needs but I doubt it is ever going to be a Nikon in this aspect!

Having tried both settings with mixed results and not finding the answer in the camera manual can anyone answer this.
When using continuous focusing for focus tracking of birds. Which is best, to have the camera set to "Centre Focusing" or "Auto Focusing"?
Obviously for centre focus you have the difficult job of keeping the subject in the centre of the viewfinder and you would expect the "Auto focus" mode to be much better as its using all the available focus points. The problem is I am still getting inconsistent results. I know that birds don't fly in a predictable flight path but any suggestions to help nail spot on focus would be gratefully received. I've tried most settings and it's still not brilliant even with a clear sky and that includes the K3. In fact I get a higher success rate by just following the bird and trying to get in normal spot focus.

I tried this on the K-30 and it did work. From memory it was expecting hours and minutes.

On the K-30 it just randomly stopped after a few repetitions and reading online others had experienced the same issue. I had thought that potentially it had stopped when it thought it was over exposing (maybe as a safeguard?) but never really confirmed this and it wasn't a feature that was specifically mentioned anywhere.

Hopefully it works fine on yours. I actually thought about moving to mirrorless/ non mechanical shutter cameras for timelapses as you can rack up a huge shutter count pretty quickly depending on your interval frequency settings.

My K30 had the same issue, haven't tried the K3 yet.

[quote:3496ace15f="petrochemist"] So it would be a bit shorter for a 1px blur with the more recent higher-res sensors.

Could you explain this to me a bit more please. Does this mean I need a faster shutter speed to eliminate movement blur in a bird shot with my K3 than I did with my K30?

I recently got it - found it great, lots to experiment with.

Nice one Graham - I don't think you'll regret it. Look forward to seeing some shots. I have the opposite issue in that because of my dodgy knees I can't bend down and get those eye level wader shots! Let's hope the weather picks up soon!

If it is predominantly wildlife Graham I would take views from specialist wildlife forums and those who specialise in wildlife but have experience with Bridge cameras. The requirements are so specialised and comments on general use may be mis-leading. By the way, my previous two Panasonics, the latest being the DMC FZ7 had incredibly sharp Leica lenses.

Well I thought that might have been the case with my previous bodies but not really critically looked at it before so maybe that's just going to be the way it is!
