Is the thaw starting?

Taken this morning in my Durham garden. The ice on a cordiline (not sure how to spell cordiline) plant appears to be thawing after several days of sub zero temperatures.

Away from the snow and ice - warm shopping inside Tyneside's Metrocentre.

I see what you mean Nathan. At first on my screen the frame was cut away from the shoulder of the girl lying down. A click brought the rest of her in, plus a fourth figure who wasn't there before. I would clone out the the kid far right, he weakens the composition.

Well spotted Lilly, that's the crop of the week.

If we could see the pocket camera of the girl lying on the beach it would tell the whole story. But on my screen her arms, hands and the camera are cropped off. It would have made a good entry for Dr Mhuni's juxtaposition competition if it had all been in the frame. Otherwise it's an interesting shot. I like the third figure OOF in the distance to complete a triangle and balance the composition.

I agree that the original is far more interesting than my straightened up effort but I can just imagine what a camera club competition judge would say about the leaning version. Also my newspaper training tells me that an editor would come down hard on any picture editor or sub editor who let it get into the paper looking like that.

Juxtaposition, textures - more than one of the past competition subjects are present in this excellent photo. I love the crisply sharp detail on the nearest elephant 'juxtaposed' against the OOF elephants further away.
Gareth, juxtaposition isn't just about opposites, its about the placing of one subject in the context of another and the relationship of one to the other. Composition and positioning are just as important as contrasts here.

Just a quick and quite severe 'rotate canvas' followed by a crop. Does the building look better straight with the woman now walking downhill or perhaps you think the original shot was far more idiosyncratic and charming?
Best wishes for the rest of your trip, David.
PS: Love ther black and white conversion.

Security and management
The welcoming party at a jeweller's in the centre of Newcastle on Tyne, England. Is the security man scaring off customers while the anxious manager is hoping they'll drop by?
