DOIK should know all about this, he's Durham Photographic Society's link with Durham Cathedral and liased a fantastic night of photography in there last summer when a couple of hundred camera buffs from a wide area turned up. The Cathedral does not normally allow photography so this is a rare chance.

Four for me. The curve of the viaduct has been caught bautifully in this graphic image.

This isn't as intrusive as might appear Tim. I always keep talking to the person I'm photographing and when I'm using a wide angle lens I explain why I'm in close. They always seem happy with that but if they were uneasy I'd back away. I'm further back with a tele-zoom.

Too right Alan. The Goths are there to be photographed. No point lurking half a mile away. Here's one of me in action at the Goths Festival early last year. It was taken by my Durham PS friend Royston Thomas, please excuse his Canon on a Pentax site. Note he is skulking behind the subject while I confront her face on.

You won't need your 300mm Ken. the Goths let you get in close up.

Great piece of swift and efficient judging Tony. Message timed at 17.59, as Hyram says, so if Kris (Womble) was planning a last second entry he's missed out this time
Congratulations to Jo on winning with a first time entry and to the other competitors for some fine photos. BTW in Hyram's picture of Bittern
you say that green is its original livery. When new it was blue.

When I'm setting off on a shoot I have a broad idea of what I want but when I get there I work instinctly and try to react to situations as they arise. It means I sometimes come back with pictures quite different from those I visualised at the start of the day.
I don't erase photos from the camera very often because sometimes a picture that looks poor on the camera screen improves with a bit of work on the computer back home. That's where I dump the rubbish. Even so I tend to keep far more pictures than I should and much, much later go back through them to edit out the poor ones, and there are a lot of those.
I suppose I take an average number of pictures when I'm out. Pink asks if we would answer that one differently if we were shooting in film. My answer is yes, with film I used to take far fewer pictures.

Great action shots and your panning technique is spot on.

Gareth and Andrew,

They may be old Andrew, but nothing like the history you folks have over there. What a paradise that must be, to live in the middle of it all.
And that's just the average age of PU members in the UK.
Seriously I enjoy this type of picture and I think it often works better in black and white. Keep up the good work.

I like the way you have used the light to bring out detail in the engine and wheels. These areas could so easily have been thrown into shadow.
