Well done Mark, really superb shots there. I agree with you 100% about the K-x, what a fabulous little camera it is. It seems to me that people tend to rate it more highly than the K-r. I know I couldn't bear to part with mine.

The seller of the lens on Preloved does not give the model number and the photos of it are quite small and not very good. However, it looks to me like a model 670AU Adapt-a-matic which is identical to the one I own. This lens is beautifully made, a joy to focus and takes sharp images at F8 or above.

However, my copy is absolutely mint, no fungus, no damage of any kind, almost as new and cost £20. This one has fungus and looks in much poorer condition than mine is. I would avoid it unless you can buy it for a tenner.

These are great shots Danny, we get Goldcrests in a Pine Tree in our garden, but I cannot get close enough to get a decent shot so far.

If you go the way of a cheap manual focus/pre-set lens with M42 thread, check if it has a T2-M42 adapter fitted. If it does then this could be changed for a T2-PK adapter. It would then fit directly to the bayonet fitting on the camera the same as the standard lens. This saves the M42-PK adapter needing to be taken out of the camera every time at change time.
You don't need to keep taking the M42 to PK adaptor out of the camera every time. You simply need to remove the spring clip from the adaptor and screw the adaptor tightly and permanently onto the lens. You now have a byonet mount lens that's as easy to mount and dismount as any other bayonet lens. This is how I use all of my M42 lenses.

The other advantage of an adapted M42 lens is that you can use it with the camera in AV mode. Simply set the required aperture on the lens and the camera adjusts the shutter speed for you.

Hi Jade, you only need adaptors with lenses that have an 'M42 Mount'. If the lens has a 'Pentax K Mount', no adaptor is needed. Regarding manual focus, yes it will be exactly the same as your Pentax ME Super film camera.

Hi Jade, you can buy an old telephoto lens for not too much money, but more than likely it will be manual focus, not autofocus. I bought a Tamron 300mm Adapt-a-matic (1972 vintage) in mint condition from an ebay seller for £20. It takes beautiful, sharp images, but is manual focus. It also requires a M42 to Pentax K Adaptor, this cost £7 - they are widely available on ebay. See image below for an example shot with this lens:

You can use teleconverters with such lenses, but this makes them more difficult to focus (less light in the viewfinder) and affects the shutter speed and / or the aperture you can use, again due to the loss in light transmission.

Having said this, it's great fun using these lenses and you can learn a lot about how to use your camera manually. I hope this helps.

Best wishes
David

If I want to shoot at low ISO does it matter???? Mac

No, not so much, but why would you always want to shoot at low ISO? It kind of defeats the object of having a capable camera and you have already said 'that is significant' to John's reply about not having to worry with the IQ on a K-5 up to 1600 ISO.

I think these images succesfully capture the essence of the place. It would be great for you to go back when there are threatening skies to add some drama.

I particularly like number 5.

Another superb set Gary, I am really impressed with your work. It's also great to see that the K-5II is proving to be a superb tool for your particular job. I'm a real novice where taking shots in difficult conditions like these is concerned, but I have done a couple of weddings recently in conditions where the light was poor to say the least. My experience on these was that the K-5IIs is incredibly reliable, both for focussing and lack of image noise, whereas unfortunately I just couldn't place the same trust in my K-5 Mk1 - it missed a lot of shots due to poor focus accuracy.
