Not noticed any difference Trixie since updating to 1.02. I understand there may be a tweak with the battery meter.

I definitely had a focussing issue on my K-X with DA L 55-300mm lens, so much so that I was on the point of returning the lens as I thought it may be faulty (very soft). Since adjusting the focus correction (hidden menu) to +50 this issue has gone away. Manual focus was never a problem, but to manually focus is sometimes tricky with a long zoom. As per previous post, I wish Pentax would make the focus adjustment menu available by default on the K-X (maybe via a firmware update). Clearly they have done this on the K-R.

P.S. The focussing on my son's K-M although it is only 5 focus points and rather slow, is definitely more accurate than my K-X in spot center focus mode.

Simon

I have the DA L version, cheaper as it does not have the quick focus and has a plastic rather than metal mount. I understand the optical quality is identical to the DA version. Only time will tell if it wears as well, but absolutely no issues so far. When I first got the lens, I thought it was a little soft, but found later this was due to auto-focus calibration being incorrect on my K-X. Now it is taking super-sharp pictures and I am very happy with it. Mine cost £150 brand new on ebay.

Chris, I am already jealous of your gear! What a camera to own for your first DSLR! Please upload some of your pics to the User Gallery once you've had a play. Far be it for me to presume as a mere beginner, but you may also want to consider the Pentax DA or DAL 55-300mm (optically both the same) as this is a stonking lens and far better VFM. Autofocus may a bit pedestrian, but image quality is fantastic.

Hi Bal, just seen your first uploaded picture, welcome to the club! I'm a fairly new member too but finding my feet now. Like bforbes I don't have a K-R (have K-X) but I do have the 55-300mm and can only say this is a fantastic lens. Great colour / contrast and pin-sharp too. Where did you manage to get the K-R with the twin lens 55-300 kit? A mate of mine at work has just bought the K-R but could only get it with the 50-200mm twin lens kit.

Trixie, I have not had any issues with my K-X, nor with my son's K-M which is basically the same body. On both our cameras it stays down with just a firm push and has never popped back up again.

Not sure on the K-R, but I have a K-X and have used the Live View Autofocus successfully. Also used it for critical manual focus in magnified view. If the K-X will magnify, I'm sure the K-R will. On the K-X you press the 'Info' button whilst in Live View and this increases the magnification on each press. Doesn't the K-R do the same thing?

ran1gers, I have the K-X and have been absolutely delighted with it, also purchased the 55-300mm separately and what a fantastic lens this is! One of the points above by mike-p is related to a post raised by me today in the forum and is slightly inaccurrate. YOU CAN calibrate the autofocus on a K-X, it's just that it is not mentioned in the manual and you need to unlock a secret menu to access it. Please see following link:

I can't comment on the K-R but looking at the deals you have available I would agree with the other comments that the first K-R deal is the best.

Just another thought, why do Pentax hide the Debug menu on the K-X (also on K-M) so you can't see it? This is the only place where you can calibrate the autofocus correctly, so surely this should be visible in the normal user menus?

I could be cynical here and suggest that they want you to take it to an approved service centre for calibration, but this is such a basic requirement that it should be visible and also explained in the User Manual.

I would appreciate a view from Pentax on this point. Also is it the same on the K-R?

Does John Riley have any thoughts / comments on this?

Since I got a Pentax 55-300mm DAL for my K-X, I have had some concerns with the softness of the pictures. This wasn't so noticeable with the 18-55 kit lens and also I shoot a lot with manual focus so hadn't really thought about it previously. I stumbled across a previous post relating to a hidden debug menu on the K-X and proceeded to do some calibration tests for the autofocus. To my surprise, the adjustments have made a huge difference to the sharpness of my autofocus pictures (the camera was set to +20 focus correction out of the box, I now have it at -50).

Have many others had issues with this? The instructions for calibrating your autofocus are at: http://ricehigh.blogspot.com/2010/01/k-x-debug-mode-tutorial-af-adjustment.html

Hope this of use to others.
