Hi Ratcathcer,

The RAW convertor is not designed to replace Photoshop, but just to get the image to a good starting point for further use in your image editor of choice. WHether you do that with Photoshop's own convertor, or Pentax's, or one of the independant, stand-alone ones.

You may find that a stand-alone one, such as Capture One, will speed up your conversions, and allow settings to be applied to several images at once. I don't know whether the Photoshop one does this. There are specific C1 threads on gere, Mattmatic knows alot about it, and he, as well as others, swear by it.

But it all comes down to personal preference, so find what suits you best. The photoshop convertor works with Elements as well as the full versions, as far as I'm aware.

Hi Ratcatcher,

You should have got a CD-ROM with your camera, which will have 'Pentax Photo Laboratory' on it (in amongst it's software). If you've loaded the Pentax software on to your computer already, and you use the Pentax Browser, you can open the Lab from there, clicking the icon for it on the menu bar along the top.

In the Lab, you can convert your RAW files to jpegs or TIFFs (better, if you're wanting to edit the files in photoshop), and adjust contrast, exposure, white balance etc. I'd advise using this to start with, as you've essentially already bought it. I now use Phase One Capture One LE too, and this gives better quality images than the Pentax software, but costs around £70.

Ah, no Peter, I was using just one set in the grip, but still having problems. It was only when I just used them in the body that the problem went away.

I've only been using one set for quite a while now, too.

Perhaps it will be sorted for the K10D

Just had a couple of weeks away (sunny Cornwall), and started having problems with my AA's again. After a few dozen shots, they'd show half power.

"Blast", I'd say (I think that was the word ), and try switching off, then back on, and usually they'd show as full.

I use a 'D', with battery grip, and had long since stopped using two sets of batteries, as many people seem to have had problems with that set-up. So for the last year I've just been using one set, in the grip (for ease of removal for charging). Anyway, thought I'd try the cells in the body instead, and problem solved, no more half power warnings. I'm guessing there's a dodgy contact in the grip, or between grip and body. Just a bit more of a pain for swapping batteries, as I have to take the grip off each time, but then I'm doing it less often. All good.

Anyway, I'm certainly not going to spend £30+ on a new charger, not with Li-Ion beckoning...

Having fully discharged and recharged my 4 NiMH's (see previous post), they seem back to normal - whereas they were showing 'half' power after 70 images or so, I took around 400 on saturday and they still showed 'full'. Maybe not the most scientific way of doing things, but it worked for me.

I wasn't so concerned with memory effect, just the fact that 2 of the batteries had been discharged more than the other 2, and it seemed to be affecting their performance as a group of 4. I guess charging was stopping before all batteries were fully charged. By fully discharging all the batteries, I would be sure that they all started at the same point, so should have a more even charge between them.

I'll see how they get on now that I've done it.

I have had recent problems with some NiMH AA's, after using two of the four in a different camera for a day. The life of the four together seemed less, even after recharging several times, so now I've completely discharged them all (running them down with an electric toothbrush!) and am currently charging them back up again. I'll see how this goes, before splashing out on another charger.

Peter,

I did that too, and saw no mention of the an SMC lens. But then I thought "I wonder if it mentions it in one that does have an SMC lens", so looked at the S45, which has SMC emblazoned around the lens, but again, no mention of it in the specification, although I didn't scan the whole manual.

So I don't think the conclusion you drew was necessarily correct for the reason you gave, but if it doesn't have SMC written on the camera somewhere, I would doubt that it has SMC, the S45 being an example of one that does. Various other models also have it clearly marked on the lens, as you would expect.

Could be wrong, of course.
