His postage prices are ridiculous though.. £25? Should only cost about £7.
You do realise these are coming from Japan?

You can position the Slik one anyhow you like - even with the grip in front of the camera if you want.

Certainly I use it frequently, positioned to the side.
Sorry, I should have said 'horizontal' grip, see here: http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/cache/offonce/pid/2319?livid=80%7C81&idx=83

As you're interested in your macro stuff, I wonder how easy it is to use this sort of head when really close to something. If, for instance, you wanted to tip the camera forward a little, you'd actually have to move it a fair distance forward (the radius of movement is quite large compared to a standard ball head). This would throw your focus way out, and you'd then have to move your whole tripod backwards to compensate.

Even with a ballhead like the 488RC2 that Mannesty and I use, this can sometimes be a problem.

Do you have another alternative in mind :
No.

I use the 488RC2 because it was what suited me best (I think, although I often think there might be something better). To get around the rotation movement I described above, the point of rotation would have to be at the nodal point of the camera/lens. That's not going to happen unless you get a specialised panorama head, which is probably going to be more trouble than it's worth for general photography, as well as being expensive. Notice I said it can 'sometimes' be a problem. It's only really if you're already near the close-focus limit of your lens, and you tip it forward, and therefore nearer your subject.

Don't worry too much about it, I was just concerned about the Slik style of pistol grip. Chris might be able to offer advise on this.

Most heads have a 3/8" thread which would be just right for your Manfrotto Clarky.

Is that the gourmet version of a deep fried mars bar? Battered Curly-wurly?

Oh i see, I thought you were offering a freebee. As for the travelling expenses i will send you a check for the canoe
I was trying to be subtle about it, hence the "Some people run photogrpahy workshops...".

Cheque for a canoe will be fine. Either of these ones would probably do me, although I can't guarantee when/if I'll reach you, or whether the cheque actually gets spent on a canoe.

Very nice gesture Dan, I wish you lived near me Is Sydney too far away :
Not at all, as long as you're happy to pay my travelling expenses. And nice gestures aside, tuition provides an increasing percentage of my income.
