I'm no thistle expert but I think those thistles are teasels.
Either way, the warm, low light through the leaves and around the flower heads is very evocative of balmy summer evenings and I too like the picture just the way it is.

Thanks guys, we certainly do get a lot of weather up here, the last couple of days have been a bit like this...

...and the place certainly looks a lot more appealing on a sunny day.
The only down side of the short summer nights is the short winter days, but battening down the hatches beside a peat fire and with a soothing glass of something restorative takes some beating.
