Thank you Chris! Yes, like you say, this turned out to a case of trial and error. I found an online LX manual and adjusted the viewfinder until all the lines in the central part of the focussing screen were sharp. The diopter then showed roughly -1.

A few days ago I received my newly acquired LX back from service, and I am about to take my first ever LX photos. I am excited

My eyesight is in fact a slightly more complex issue. Without contact lenses I have perfect vision for about 1 meter, then things start to get blurry. I am near sighted. With contact lenses my eyesight is great from about 1 meter till infinity, so I have to use reading glasses in combination with the contact lenses. In other words, my eyesight is not fully corrected.

I am wondering if someone could shed some light on how to adjust the diopter of the LX FA-1. Well, I use contact lenses, and on my left eye, which I look through the finder with, I use - 1.5 in strength. I wear contact lenses when photographing, should the diopter be set to "0". When adjusting the diopter, should the lens be taken off, or left on?

I am grateful for any advice about FA-1 diopter adjustment!

Beautiful! I only have the ES myself, and I am planning one day to send it in for CLA and start using it

No 5 and 6 are the two that I like the most, great colours and nicely framed.

Use air only on your screen.
Sometimes air will not be enough to remove debris from a focussing screen. In such instances I would not hesitate to once more use the method described above - not only on a Nikon FE2, but even on a Pentax SLR.

I once cleaned a very dirty focussing screen of a Nikon FE2, and had success with soaking the screen for some hours in "Green Clean" Optic Liquid, and afterwards holding the screen under lukewarm water to rinse the screen of Optical Fluid and debris. The screen was left to air dry before re-installing. I managed to remove all of the dirt on the focussing screen, without touching the screen except along the edges. No brushes, cotton buds or wipes were used. "Green Clean" make many types of optical cleaning products, amongst others DSLR sensor cleaning kits. Their Optical Fluid contains no alcohol or any other strong chemical substances.

For me the most difficult part was to remove and re-install the focussing screen. But I guess practice is the way to gain self confidence in this task, similarly to other aspects of life.

Good luck with your endeavour
